Attached base to hitch and then put the rack on the post. Bikes went on easily and held them on tight. Did have to put a bungee cord around the bottom of the bike to the post, no big deal though. Thought the carrier was excellent, because bikes came off easily and post came down to get into back window of SUV. Loved the rack, good value.
First bike rack I've owned. I researched others and found this Allen model to be a good combination of features for the price. It assembled easily and fit very well into my trailer hitch with no wobbling. Only complaint would be that the upright moves slightly forward and back at hard stops. But this can be fixed by stuffing or taping a little bit of padding in the space where it can move. Tilt-down feature works well and is essential to using my tailgate when the rack is on. Overall, this bike rack is a good one and even a GREAT one for the price.
I installed this rack on my Escape in about 15 minutes or so. Very easy. You only need a couple of 9/16 wrenches and some muscles. I have not driven down the road very far with the bikes yet, but everything feels very sturdy. Folding the entire rack down to open the trunk is very simple. Also the rack is far enough from the back of the vehicle that the glass part of the door can be opened w/o folding it down. I also like the feature of the fold down arm. The only thing I think someone may not like is the fact that the straps that hold the bikes on are a cloth material. I think alot of other models have plastic /rubber like straps.
I read the reviews on other bike racks and many had broke. This bike rack seems to be durable. I wish they would have made it for a 2" hitch. I had to buy an adapter and there is some movement, but it holds the bikes well. The folding options are very useful and seem to be strong.
I have a reese 1 and 1/4" reciever hitch....the Allan sleeve that is supposed to fit into this is not only a very sloppy/loose fit ...it has rounded corners ...not the square tubbing you would expect .as to fit properly. the reese hitch has a 1/2" hole for the locking pin....the Allan had a 1/4 which I had to drill out to 1/2".I have had to shim it in place which means everytime I remove it from the hitch....I have to reshim to install it again....total worthless, I am buying a new bike rack and never again a Allan rack!!
