Detailed product description

This mold kit allows quick sampling of visible mold colonies, questionable materials, or discoloration.Samples are taken through the use of adhesive strips or by bagging small "bulk" type samples. Sample bags are included for bulk sampling. As directed in the enclosed directions, the test strips are brought into contact with the surface to be sampled. These exposed strips are then placed on the sample submission card provided, and returned for laboratory analysis. A pre-addressed envelope is provided for return of the mold samples. Test results in the form of an analysis report are mailed back within 5-7 days of receipt at the test lab. This kit provides sampling capacity for up to 6 mold samples taken via mold strips and up to 3 "bulk" (2" x 2" x 0.5") samples such as a piece of carpeting, wallpaper, wood, or similar material.Molds are microscopic fungi that exist almost everywhere. Molds feed off organic materials and facilitate decomposition of these materials. Plants and animals routinely use these decomposed materials. To thrive, mold only requires moisture and a food source. Mold spores, from which mold colonies grow, can enter a building through open doorways, windows, leaks, HVAC systems, on pets, clothing, and many other ways. Once mold spores are present and land upon a site providing moisture and nutrition, it will begin to colonize and spread. This process will continue unless all mold spores are eradicated. High humidity or condensation can provide sufficient moisture to support mold growth. This is common in bathrooms, basements, and on and around windows during winter months.

For use with visible mold colonies, commonly found in: Attics and basements Kitchens and bathrooms Heating and air conditioning duct work Living and sleeping areas Boats and automobiles In and around pet areas Pools, utility, and storage areas

If you have mold, you need this kit

I received the Kidde Mold Detection Kit and was so relieved to know that I would finally be getting some answers to the black stuff that was on the ceiling of my attic. This kit comes with everything you need to send to the laboratory for testing. The kit allows for a quick sample for visible mold colonies. All I had to do was remove the sticky test strip tape and place it on the moldy area. Once you have the tape strip, gently press the sticky side of the tape but be careful not to press hard over the sample area. if you press too hard you might crush the mold spores which may invalidate the test. You can include 6 test areas You can also use a second method of sampling by taking a bulk sample of a piece of material like a piece of carpet, tile, wood floor, etc by cutting a 2x2x.5 inch sample and place it in the plastic bag provided. You can include up to 3 bulk samples. Once you get your samples, you must mail in the samples in the envelope provided. My postage was 73 cents for one sample and you also must include $20 for each sample to be tested. In a few weeks I received an email with the results from the lab. I have included a picture of the results so you can see that they tell you if you have No, Low, Moderate or Heavy mold and the kind it is. I really like that they use these terms instead of giving a number as it is easier to understand. They also explain what the different types of mold found are and what the possible health effects might be. They give you a link to the EPA mold help guide regarding how to get rid of the mold. Overall, I would highly recommend using the Kidde Mold Detection Kit if you even suspect you have mold in your home.

It's a bit pricey to test for mold. Included in this kit is testing strips or bags for small bulk type samples. There is a lab fee of $20 per test strip and you can send up to 6 test strips which would total $120 for all. The box has some useful information about what mold actually is, why we should be concerned about it and what we should do if we have a medical condition that could be a result from exposure to mold. We have a couple of spots that have been cleaned and still have the discoloration so we needed a test to be sure if it was mold or not. Pretty scary stuff if gone untreated. This test was easy and I would definitely recommend it to others who need to test for mold.

I selected the Kidde Mold Detection Kit. I am thrilled about this mold kit! I've been telling my husband for years that we need mold testing done. We live in a house that is almost 100 years old. Although it is sturdy, we've had roof damage in the past and a leaking chimney. Over the years I've seen many places inside the house that had spots, large and small, of either mold or mildew. Getting someone out here to check was going to cost over $250, and my husband said that's not possible right now. This kit comes with a card for 6 samples, and 3 bags for bulk samples like a tiny piece of carpet and such. The cost is $20 for the 6 sample card to be tested. If you send a bulk sample, it's $20 for each. Still way more inexpensive than having someone come out here! We tested around the shower, inside a pantry that was near the leaking fireplace, inside the cabinets under the sink, and a few spots in the basement and crawl space. I'm hoping the results aren't anything serious, but it would be nice to know if any mold in the house is causing me to have so many sinus issues. I would recommend this to anyone who lives in an older house, or for anyone who has had any type of leaks, no matter how small.

Different from what I expected

I thought I was ordering a self-testing kit where I would get results at home on my own. This is a kit that contains tools for swabbing and taking samples, and storing them, but I didn't realize that I would have to pay an extra $20 to submit the samples to an outside lab for analysis. I think the cost is reasonable, but my rating loses a star because the description was somewhat misleading. I haven't completed the samples, so I can't provide feedback about the service itself. Instructions and everything needed for submission are provided (see pic), and the instructions are clear, specific, and literate. The process seems easy enough. The product is just not what I expected and it wasn't clear in the item description that this extra cost of service was part of the product. It needs to be made clearer.

When I got this testing kit I was thinking it would work to check mold in the air-such as with a Petri dish. With this kit you take the six sticky testing strips and press them to the area of concern. You then send them to the company to get the results of the strips tested. There is a $20 fee per testing strip. Being I don't have any spots in our house of visible concern I did not send in any strips. I will look for a different type of testing kit that tests the air quality.

Easy and inexpensive but must pay again for test

So I thought this was great to buy and test out the basement and attic in a new house and then read it over after I got home and you have to pay another fee for the lab to actually do the test. Still did it and it was relatively fast, but wish all expenses were covered in the actual purchasing price. Seems like it really works, so it does seem to be a good item.

Easy to use mold detection kit.

I've looked at a variety of different mold detection kits on the market. As far as I can tell, this one is as easy to use as any of them. It has good straight forward and easy to follow instructions for use. The outer packaging plainly states the test's uses and limitations. You can use this kit to collect test samples for mold detection in areas that are clearly visible. It's not recommended for interior wall spaces or other places that are not in plain view. The manufacturer recommends leaving that up to professional home inspectors. That being said, I can see where this would be a quick, and relatively easy, answer to the questions "what kind of mold is this?" and "is the mold dangerous?" The kit includes 6 test strips and a collection card, as well as 3 bulk sample bags. These are for samples of visible mold colonies, or any discoloration or material that you feel may be contaminated by mold. The material you place in the bags might include carpet or wallpaper. After collection of the samples, you simply place them on the card, or in the bags, and place them in the preaddressed envelope to send for analysis at a lab. There is a $20 fee for each sample you want tested. This could get a little pricey if you send in all 9 samples, which would cost you $180. Not really a bad price for quick, convenient results that you'll get back in about a week. This would be a good starting point for assessing a suspected mold issue in any structure. Along with the test materials, the kit includes some informative information about molds and their effects on your health. This test could help you quickly determine if further testing or immediate action should be taken to control the mold. Could be a first step to improving your environment, which is a really good investment.

Good concept - delays in results

Kidde created a Mold Detection Kit that is user-friendly. The only downfall is the delay in getting answers. The kit comes with adhesive strips that touch the surface of the area in question. Then you attach the sample to the submission card provided. The kit comes with a pre-addressed envelope to send the sample to a laboratory for testing. This only works with visible mold colonies that you would find in an attic, duct work, basements, etc. If you think there is mold, but you can't see it then it would be wise for you to hire someone who specializes in mold remediation. I like that this gives you an inexpensive way to find out if you have mold. However, the process is long. It could take weeks before you can get an answer from the labs. There aren't enough strips either. If you have a lot of spots you want to test, then you'll have to buy more strips. This can be costly. I recommend reading the instructions carefully and weigh your options. If you have minor organic growth that you want to test, then this is a great kit. If you have a huge mold issue, then hire a professional. 3/5 stars.

Not the easiest process

Well, I was excited to try this product because you never know what's going on in your environment. However, this was not a simple process. This was not a process that you could do and then get results right away. Once you purchase this kit then you have to literally send things out and pay an additional cost for getting results. That does not make this easy at all and was really hoping for a quicker result.

I got this mold kit to see what type of mold we may have in our bathroom and if the mold came back into one of the rooms from a while ago. As I was reading the instructions for this kit, I realized I had to collect the samples. I thought, how am I supposed to do that? And with what the sticky side of the sample tape on the card? How hard is too hard? At 1st it says $20 per bulk item sent in but if you read further, it says $20 per card sample AND bulk sample. NEVER MIND! How do I know I even did it right? Sometimes it is so much safer and better to leave it to the professionals
