Removable plate are the only way to go with a GF grill. Very easy to clean, so much better than the old-style fixed plates. Variable temp control is a plus. Very satisfied.
I bought this on sale as an impulse buy and am sooooo glad I did!!! The waffle plates are so easy to use this makes the best waffles!! We had a smaller George Foreman that we've used for years but needed a larger one for use when feeding more than 2 people. Very easy to use and easy clean up!! Would definitely recommend!!
I have had other counter top grills and the cleaning is a huge problem. What a mess!!! This grill is the best!!! The plates come off and go right in the dish washer. Easy and clean. Because of the assortment of plates I can cook just about anything. This grill lives on my counter and has been feeding a group of teenaged kids. for about a year now.
This grill has removeable plates, which are awesome in concept, however, I do worry when I am storing the parts that I might accidentally break the plastic handle/locks that stick out and could be easily broken off when placing into a cabinet. Storage of the extra grill plates is cumbersome, particularly when I worry I might break off a handle/lock. The grill itself performs greatly and will get a lot of use at my house--the nonstick surface is a breeze to clean (I use a toothbrush to get into the nooks and crannies of the upper-grill plate (which is the hardest piece of the set to clean). I ordered the G4 but it didn't take me long to figure out I wanted the bake plate, which can be ordered seperately at amazon.com (or order the g5 in the first place which includes the bake plate). Overall--awesome value for the money spent.
Love the red color and style. In changing the plates have found you MUST make sure they are snapped in, otherwise when you shut the lid, they fall off. Even though it says plates are dishwasher safe have decided the coating will probably last longer if they are hand washed.
(A) My first "Evolve" came with lightweight hinges that were loose and wobbly and wouldn't allow the top to sit squarely on the base. However, I was sent a replacement that had improved, much stronger hinges. Wonderful!! P.S. I baked some brownies in the deep dish pan @ 350° for 20 minutes – they were super!! (B) Instructions say the plates are dishwasher safe. The plates themselves, yes, but the coating a definite no. NEVER put non-stick coated cookware in a dishwasher (sorry, George!!). Dishwasher heat and detergent are too strong for non-stick coating. Over a period of time, the heat and soap will dry the coating and cause it to wear off prematurely. Anytime you need to wash the plates, use only warm water and light dish soap. Soak if need be. Rinse, then pat dry with a soft absorbent cloth or paper towel. Then take a drizzle of vegetable oil and rub it in. This will keep your plates seasoned, the way they should be, and ready for the next use. (C) Please replace the cross-hatch plate, or offer a substitution. It is the ONLY reason I didn't give the grill 5 stars. The cross-hatch plate is difficult, tedious, and frustrating to clean - too many tiny corners that need attention. (Again, the dishwasher is not the way to clean plates with non-stick coating.) After I wash it, I have to use a basting brush coated with vegetable oil to get into the corners, which takes quite a bit of time. Including a regular grill plate for the top instead of the cross-hatch would be a much better choice for the grill/plates package.
The best thing this appliance has going for it is it's appearance, especially the color red. First of all, a lot of steam comes out from the rear hinge area, so if your counter top is surrounded by natural wood cabinets like mine, they will be exposed to a lot of moisture. Not good! And it didn't take long for the hinges of the grill to start squeaking due to, I suspect, all the moisture. The thermostat doesn't appear to run true because the food, vegetables in particular, takes far too long to grill when using the recommended setting. And at times, it doesn't seem to be heating well at all. Also, the bright red color is fading even though I've had this grill just a few months and only used it about 6 times. What's more, the handle blocks the view of the on/off light when you're monitoring the grill from across the room. I'm very disappointed with this appliance which, in my opinion, isn't made well and lacks a quality feel. I would rather have paid more money and gotten a better product. Unfortunately, one wasn't available in red, so I trusted the Foreman name and got this one.
This was such a disappointing purchase. I had heard so many great things about this grill, but unfortunately non of them were true. First, it is a nightmare fitting the plates on. Second, the product emits a horrible smell of burning plastic when on ( I had to open doors and windows), and third, I made waffles that looked great but were not hot, even though they were cooked through!! Please save yourself the aggravation, I am returning this immediately.........................
Received it but it never worked. The temp control seemed to be stuck and didn't line up with the temps on the unit. I tried cooking a frozen turkey burger and then a frozen hamburger and all it did was thaw them out and then it shut down. It was a piece of junk and I brought it back the next day. The real reason I brought it was because it had removeable trays. Don't recommend you buy one without the removeable trays as clean up is so much harder. Removeable trays are worth the extra few dolars that you will pay. I brought another brand that has them and clean up is a breeze.
I've owned two George Foreman grills. No problems at all with the first. I wan't so lucky with the second. The Teflon surface on the bottom plate began to come off before I had used the grill 50 times. The problem is that it was more than two years old. No warranty. It worked well up until this time, but I'm really disappointed that the Teflon failed after so few uses. I plan to replace it, but not with another GF device. I have no desire to be fooled twice.
