This shelf MUST be bolted to the wall. It isn't a free standing shelf. It is very easy to put together and it looks great once you have it put in place. People say it is a flimsy shelf. I wouldn't describe it as flimsy, just know that you have to ground it to the wall. We like ours so much we are going to buy another one. They do hold quite a bit.
A very good product , price was good , the quality could be a little better but I cannot complain at this price .
I had read the reviews of this unit so I had a 1/4 sheet of plywood cut to 72x40 inches before I started to assemble it. Basically there are two halves to this tower. I was surprised to find it was more sturdy than I had been led to believe. The only week place is where the two half join together. I added my plywood and the tower became very sturdy. I do have to admit that the screws that are predrilled go in almost all the way so you only have two or three turns that hold, however they seam to work fine. Time will tell if that is going to be a problem or not. The media tower hold quite a number of movies. The self where the two halves join is only high enough for audio CDs. The rest of the self work great for DVDs or Blue Rays. Overall I am glad we bought this tower and I do recommend it.
I know this is a media tower and is meant for DVDs and such, but standard paperback books are about the same height and width as a DVD case (just a bit thicker). I have a large collection and traditional book shelves waste a lot of space since you only use 4 1/2 inches of the typical 12 inch depth. I have seen many complaints about the sturdiness of this tower. I had no problems with assembly. As with all furniture of this type, just don't try to over tighten the screws to make it "hold stronger". You actually weaken the wood and make it fail faster. The one quirk I found is that the back panels are sized a bit weird and don't go all the way to the edges on top and bottom. You have to lay all the panels out and then even out the gap on the outer edges. I almost didn't have enough wood to put the screws in the top. It worked out and the unit is holding up fine. I have well over 100 books in the shelf. I expect the short span between the braces to help keep the shelves from bowing like they did on my old standard bookshelf.
My wife chose this DVD stand for its look as well as the storage. It holds many DVDs and looks pleasing to the eye. The first one took a little longer to put up but the second was a breeze. We are ver happy with our purchase and the strength of it should last a while with DVDs, small books or CDs. Mounting is key so it doesn't fall over or forward.
It looks nice when it's standing, bolted to a wall, but it is VERY cheaply made and if you don't break it while tightening the bolts that connect the top and bottom halves, you'll almost certainly break it trying to stand it up afterwards. I wish it didn't have the small shelf right in the middle too, as it really breaks up the flow of DVD's. But compared to the other more expensive options out there, it's working ok as a display shelf. Just don't lean on it, or against it, or put much more weight than DVD's on it and it should be fine.
I assumed erroneously that this was NOT press wood but some other material. Sadly it IS just press wood. It is NOT just one section as the picture implies but 2 big heavy pieces that are held together by a very poor design. Rather than throw the whole thing away after that cost (and carrying this big heavy box home on my Scooter) I MADE it work and used not the wall holder they provided which was less than adequate with the weight of the DVDs included. NO I have 6 EXTRA wood screws THROUGH it to hold it to the wall (which is going cost me one day when I move from this apartment). NOW that said, now that its up and solid to the wall I am VERY happy with the finished product LOL
Kudos to Walmart for super-fast deliver (next day). I have a large DVD collection and was looking for the least expensive, moderately attractive storage solution and this seemed to fill the bill (ordered 3 units). Items arrived in good shape and were well packed. Assembly instructions are not very detailed but good enough to figure out if you've ever assembled similar products. While not fancy, the materials used were decent considering to overall unit cost but the engineering and design is HORRIBLE. I will explain. The unit is assembled in two sections, upper and lower with a thin backing board that is provided in four sections. In most other cases this backing adds rigidity and makes the assembled unit sturdy enough to stand on its own and to be moved if needed. In this design, however, the backing is actually split where the two sections come together offering absolutely NO SUPPORT. The ONLY fasteners holding the two sections together are a single cam connector on each of the vertical dividers - the unit could not even stand correctly without toppling over and ripping out the cam connectors from their mountings. The only way to get this to work is to PURCHASE an additional backing (1/2in plywood in my case) cut to fit the entire back area and fasteners to securely mount the additional backing to all vertical and horizontal dividers. I also purchased spray paint for the edges to the fix was not so noticeable. All totaled, I needed to spend an additional $20 per unit in materials, never mind my time and effort, just to make the unit workable. Even considering the added expenditures the unit is a good value compared to others with similar capacity. But the fact that this item is not usable right out of the box is a huge disappointment. Too bad because from a cost and appearance perspective it fit my needs perfectly. Just very poor engineering on this item. The ONLY reason it gets 2 stars is the price.
it's not to bad putting it together until you join the two halves together my cam locks kept break apart (i ordered some cam locks for this reason) i couldn't join the halves together for nothing finally i realized the pre drilled holes where the cam locks was drilled to low and the cam screw was coming down far enough so the cam lock could grab it was very frustrating you spend alot of time trying to make something work that should go together seamlessly
Extremely poor design. Everything was going smooth until I had to put the top and bottom part together. The top and a bottom part connect with only four cam screws and some tiny wooden dowels. Not enough to hold the weight. Mine snapped in half as I was trying to turn it upright and damaged the existing holes. I followed the directions exactly. I am so disappointed and upset. I may try to attach a piece of sturdy wood behind the two pieces to connect them together in hopes it will work. Otherwise, I don't even know what to say. Waste of my time and money.
