This is the quickest and easiest way to start a charcoal BBQ without lighter fluid. I have used these for years - but be careful, don't set the hot tip on the cord after you unplug it. If it melts it will short and become unusable! The price is great - equal to a few bottles of lighter fluid and this product is good for years and years!
This unit costs little more than 2 quarts of lighter fluid, but will last far, far longer. My last one survived nearly 10 years, and only failed due to my leaving it out in the elements one time too many. The best part of using an electric charcoal starter is that you can supply a heat source for as long as you need, never worrying about if you've used too much or too little lighter fluid. It's also better than a charcoal chimney, since you light the whole pile of charcoal at once, instead of lighting part of it, then dumping out the coals to heat the rest, wasting expensive charcoal in the process. I've used it on briquets and lump charcoal with equal success. The only thing to watch out for -- make sure you have a place to put it once you've pulled it out from the charcoal. I simply lay it in the ash catcher beneath the kettle on my Weber until it cools down and then store it safely.
Very efficient, 'green-free' environmental friendly. Used these before but had forgotten about them until I recently seen one at a friend's house; which refreshed my memory of "years ago usage"...
This works like a charm; the starter lit up the fire in about 3-4 minutes and I was cooking a few minutes after that. I highly recommend this even if you don't care about it being "green," it works very fast.
