Impressive not overpowering I give Alpen Glow high standards on lighting
We took the AlpenGlow 500 camping with us over the weekend and it was a great lantern! The kids loved all of the different color options, and we loved the flickering candle mode. We sat around the "candle" talking long after the sun had set. The lantern is easy to charge, easy to use, and highly practical on camping adventures. We highly recommend it!
Overall this lantern does exactly what it advertises and well. The “shake weight” feature works well and is quite accurate. The AlpenGlow 500 feels lighter then the BioLite lantern/flashlight combo which has been my go to for powering my site lights in my tent. The 500 is much larger in width but the same height. Personally for Backpacking (which is what I do) I would pick up the smaller AlpenGlow, and use this one more where size and weight aren't an issue. If you wanted a good lantern that's very feature packed, I highly recommend this, especially with the ChromaReal colors.
This is the most awesome light. I've used it for a night light, to entertain grandchildren, work light, etc. it has lots n lots of lighting options. At first I was a little intimidated my all the ways to dim, color, light, moving/flickering lights. But it was easier than I thought to control. Took maybe 15 minutes at the most. I used it every night and the battery was barely used. 3 out of four dots. I'm now leaving it on to truly see how long it will go. It is a definite buy, maybe 2 the wife steals it all the time.
Exactly what i was looking for and so much more. I was in search of some sort of light to use for a night light for my kids in there tent when we went camping. Well, the alpenglow is perfectly! It not only fit my need, it delivers so much more. We have used the candle flicker when sitting out side, star gazing. We have used it as a lantern at the fire pit, we even used it as a accent light at a baby shower (set it to pink to welcome our new niece). The fact is, it has so many functions you will be finding all sorts of great ways to use it you never even considered. If you want a bright base light, a low light to set the mood, a colored fade to calm your kids, or a multi changing party light on the go, the alpenglow has you covered. Period.
This is my second AlpenGlow 500. They make ideal night lights, perfect for midnight trips to the bathroom or kitchen, without having to turn other lights on. While all the settings are very cool, the candle flicker is my favorite- and the charge lasts forever on that settting!
i've been digging BioLite product since its inception. seriously. Design, quality of build and overall smart function meets design is a winner. Purchased AlpenGlow 500 and it arrived with an instructional video. Nice... yet why a video? Answer: because there are so many things the light will do. Without getting totally granular, here's my pros and cons of the AlpenGlow 500: PROS: Solid build, sturdy as ALL of the other BioLite products are. Battery last ridiculously long.. even on bright mode. Dig the small concealed handle atop (to hang in tents, trees, misc.). CONS: 1) AlpenGlow 500 uses a micro USB.. Why? Should be USB C as almost ALL smartphones and laptops are USB C enabled, plus USB C powers faster. 2) There are so many modes to turn the lights on, you'll need a video to remember it. Trust me, I can't even remember how to enable the multi color mode. This leads to 3). Less is more. Get rid of the 8 ways to enable different light modes.. make it SIMPLE. Yes, it's cool yet it simply takes too much time to remember these steps. Lastly, folks, bravo for this product and it' lil sister AlpenGlow 250 yet I truly believe you've taken two steps back and one step forward ;-)
The main reason I picked this lantern was for its large internal battery (much larger than the competition) and brightness. At 500 lumen it feels like old gas lamps I used to use and with the warm glow option it looks them too. I was tired of inflatable solar lanterns leaking, breaking, and not charging fast so I wanted something that could last a long time and be recharged easily with USB while driving or with a battery bank. The glow of the lantern is very even and no hotspots to blind you. Light falloff is gradual making the usable area of light more than enough for a picnic table, tent, car camp area, room, etc. It has a few quirks like flickering when turning on or changing brightness, and I would prefer another button to the shake feature. It's very lightweight and I almost feel it could be slimmed down or gain an even larger internal battery. I'm curious to see how the translucent plastic shell holds up over time with camping and hiking use; scratches and scuffs might reduce the light transmitted through the shell or impact its evenness. A retractable handle or slots for a strap would be nice as I like to use it while walking sometimes; it's easier to see the night sky and hike using a handheld warm light lantern vs a headlamp. I've used this for photoshoots and night photography and the color options are nice to play around with. I enjoy the flickering campfire/candle mode and use it often at home. The randomization of the flicker could be improved for a more natural look but hopefully that can be done with a firmware update. Overall this is currently the best LED camping lantern on the market when considering the best combo of size, brightness, durability, and battery life. I'm happy I bought it as it will get heavy use in my outdoor photography business.
I did think it would be bigger, I l it looked bigger on the website compared to the other models. But it was bright and had fun colors and modes. Stayed charged for a full 2 night of camping.
Light is good but needs a handle on top for carrying around and a hook on the bottom for hanging in tent. Light itself though is amazing!!!!
