A persistent pair of doves attempted to build a nest on a ledge in our carport. Because the ledge is only 3" wide, they were unable to keep a single stick up there, but that didn't stop them from trying, resulting in piles of debris that had to be swept up 2-3 times a day. These spikes quickly put an end to that chore. The only thing about these spikes is that you can only interlock 2 sections (each section about a foot long apiece). One end has the male/female part, but the other end is straight. Not a big deal by any means, just a little odd. Walmart has the best price by far, and I wish I would've bought these a little sooner.
This was my second purchase of the item, because it worked so well. The birds just go away, making one less daily clean up task for me.
Easy to put up and keeps birds off ledges. 6" sections so can use as many or as few as you need. Plastic base can be cut to shorten for smaller areas. We used thumb tacks to put them up.
The top of our home's chimney stack is about 2.5' X 4.5'. It had become the perfect gathering place some large crows. Their activities echoed down the flue stack into the house. It sounded as if they were playing soccer. The Bird-X stainless spikes looked like a solution. I ordered two boxes on-line. Easy transaction. They were shipped promptly and arrived ready to face their opponents. The base of the Bird-X is a clear plastic that can snap together to form lines of spikes. There are holes for securing the strips with either nails or screws. With the vent cap centered on the crow's playing field, I chose to create a staggered sun burst, radiating out from the center and completely covering the surface of the flue stack. I used construction adhesive to fix the individual Bird-X strips in place. There have been one or two crow attempts to land and start a game but thus far the Bird-X Stainless Steel Bird Spikes have won the scrimmage!, forcing the competition to find a new plating field.
Good deterrent. Pliable; easy to work with. 10 pieces in 1-foot lengths. I used it to keep squirrels from eating the bird suet block I have hanging from my deck. I wired pieces to the shepherd's pole and arm from which the suet hangs, and around the baffle (which didn't keep the squirrels from getting the suet). I've tried to keep them off for years; I think this is the final solution.
Swallows kept returning to the same spot. I removed the nest and cleaned the area 3 times, tried a hawk decoy, nothing worked. I placed these, and the birds continued to fly around and try to land, but could not. It has been a week now and no nests. I am very pleased so far. They blend in with the brick on my house, and you can see them only when up close- better than the shiny things I had tried first.
Was having a horrible time with birds sitting on our front porch rails & bannisters since spring and trying to nest on the porch. They just took over! Every time it rained they took shelter by sitting on the rails, lined up just like they do on telephone lines & would brazenly line up to wait out the rain/storms. Of course that meant birdpoop all over the bannisters & on the front door & windows when they would fly at the house then arc back out when we open the front door or tapped the windows to scare them. Fake owl didn't work, chimes didn't work. But evidently sharp spiked things do!
I needed to put these across a patio covering which drains into the rain spout. The birds would enter and make nests in the rain spouting which was difficult to clean out. After reading many reviews, I ordered this product. I was able to cut the item to the size I needed. It does not come with adhesive, so I used liquid nails without a problem. So far so good.
The product shipped in a box, but it was kind of a snug fit, such that a few of the wires broke off from the plastic base, in the process of removing it from the box. Then, after a few days use ... when cats and possums would try to walk across it ... even more wire spikes broke off. The manufacturer apparently just barely pushed the wires into small slots in the base. They could have easily heated the wires, and 'buried' them in the plastic base. At approx. $2.50/foot, I would have expected better quality control. There are few alternative products, and so I guess this one works ... by default.
I mounted them on my deck railing to deter squirrels but the squirrels tip toed right across them. The birds too. Had to return for refund.
