Walmart is selling the Bold for half what AT&T Wireless is asking for and there is no need to fill out any rebate forms. (2-yr contract required) When you add the Early Term Fee of $175 and Walmart's price $149 you still come out better.
The latest BB with the biggest and most brilliant screen is too easily "water damaged" because the 9000's LCD screen is directly exposed to the elements unlike prior models who protect their LCD's behind lexan cases. The result is a 10k run with the phone in a fanny pack will succumb to body heat actually infiltrating the works like a sturdier phone left in the sauna. Clear cellophane type covers fail to protect from this vulnerability since the ambient air enters through the earpiece and speaker mike which can't be covered over with protective plastic designed to keep an LCD scratchfree. An alternative is to remove the SIM and install into a prepaid GO or spare compatible GSM phone during any exercise or anything else more strenuous then desk diving because the Bold is a departure from RIM's reputation of reliability and durability. AT&T/Cingular's "3G" network seems less than 3G with this phone, more often the network resets and this halts downloads if using the phone as a modem or if you prefer to watch video's / MMS over a phone. AT&T's 3G buildout still seems a work in progress and terribly behind Sprint and Verizon since GSM was the last standard to hit the US and after NIMBY became common. Most often, the phone seems to work slightly faster than glacially slow EDGE (the 1st gen iPhones were EDGE) and more like a 128kbs ISDN instead of the advertised 3G. It can be unlocked, using a code or MML and TMobile or Orange ready along with others if you spend time in the Eurozone. the GPS reception is superb and works indoors unless you have a 30ft deep basement w/o windows.
