After nearly a decade on the job, Bob the Builder is no longer buzz-worthy, but this efficient British stop-motion animated series remains one of kidvid's most dependable workers. Bob and his crew of shiny, happy machines embark on a new slate of projects in this collection of five stories from Bob the Builder groundbreaking Project: Build It extension, in which Bob and company develop Sunflower Valley as an eco-friendly community. The foundation of this series, that does for construction machines what Thomas the Tank Engine does for trains, is teamwork, as exemplified in the crew's rallying cry, "Can we fix it?" "Yes we can." In the story "Bob's Top Team," the machines work independently of an over-extended Bob to transport a dinosaur fossil for the new Sunflower Valley Visitor's Center. The perils of not listening to directions and trying to do too many things at once are demonstrated in the stories "Listen with Scrambler" and "Dizzy the Walking Bus." Bob the Builder is to be commended for its exceedingly optimistic spirit, positive reinforcement and constructive messages about recycling and conservation. And despite some grating voices, the machines are good company; neither cross, cranky nor ill-mannered. Longtime viewers may be momentarily confused by different voices coming out of familiar characters, most notably, Spud the Scarecrow. But, as always, Top Team is a job well done.
