We love this stuff. It's so quick and easy. The amount of time it takes to make a dozen tortillas is so worth the trouble, it you could even call it that.
I searched high and low in my Brooklyn, NY area for masa harina and was really surprised that only one supermarket carried it (a 4.4 lb bag). Lots of Bob's RM products, but no MH. I decided to order the organic MH and made my first homemade tortillas. The corn smell and then taste was incredibly aromatic. My family and a friend couldn't stop the compliments. Everyone actually agreed that they could eat them every day. Doesn't get any better than that for a #dadtryingtocook. The recipe in the bag was straight forward. Two notes: add the hot water slowly and forget about a mixing spoon. Get your clean hands in their and knead. That is the best way to judge the lessening stickiness. I used almost 2 cups of water to my 2 cups of flour and had to sprinkle in a bit more to get the right consistency. Factor in 1 hour the dough sitting under a wet towel or paper towel (what I used). I hand rolled ping pong ball sized balls and also used my wrought iron tortilla press with parchment paper (not plastic). Place that ball in the center and smoosh. Peel it off and place it gracefully in that hot griddle. Keep an eye on cooking both sides. Thanks BRM for the excellent Organic Masa Harina!!
Previously, I had bought and used non-organic masa in a supermarket. There is quite a difference. When I added water to the organic masa harina, a wonderful fragrance of corn was released. Also, the color is a rich yellow, not pale like the other masa. When I formed the tortillas using my press (and I am no expert) the tortillas held together better. They taste really good too. I had a cheese quesadilla made with 2 tortillas. Very filling and I felt well-nourished.
I finally found what I was looking for in a corn flour for my tortillas! Healthy, pesticide free, GMO free, and gluten free; love this and my family does too!
By far, the best Masa I have ever used. The texture, even before I opened the package was superb. The fragrance was rich and satisfying. I will never use another brand ever!
I mainly liked that this could be ordered. Local stores only carry 5 pound bags of masa harina ... way more than I need. This size is perfect for me. I haven't made tacos or tortilla yet but I have in the past and I expect no problems whatever. Three ingredients.
I made tamales and they turned out perfect. We're an all organic family, so when we have a craving it's great that BRM has all our needs covered!
I like this product and I love having the opportunity to use Organic masa harina. However, I'm going to be honest because you want to improve the product. The picture below is of tortillas made with 100% Bob's Red Mill Masa Harina, but on a regular basis I mix Bob's Red Mill Masa Harina with P.A.N harina, which is precooked white corn flour for making tortillas, or with great value masa harina at a 1:1 ratio because when I only use Bob's masa harina, the mixture becomes clumpy and sticky and it is harder to manipulate to make the tortillas. When I add one of these other harinas, I avoid this issue. If you can improve the product, I would love to make tortillas with just Bob's organic masa harina.
I have used this product for several years and we love it. We make taco shells, tamales, empanadas and cornbread with it. It has a really wonderful texture and the flavor is amazing!
I haven't tryed it yet. I want to say something about the packaging. it looked like it had been cut open 1 1/2 cut. Needless to say but it got everywhere, lost a lot of it and vacuumed a lot. For the price I paid for a small bag of find corn meal it should have been protected much better then it was.
