This is a very nice easy to use sewing machine. It comes with an instructional DVD that is very helpful. The DVD described for us how to use the self threader for the needle, a handy gadget. I tried it on various weights of material and it handled well. The various stitches are easy to set. It is light and easy to carry.
This Brother 37-Stitch Strong and Tough Sewing machine is a great little no nonsense - easy to understand and use - get the job done quickly - basic sewing machine. I have a big computerized sewing machine with all the bells and whistles you can possibly imagine. But I almost never use it because it is so complicated. I will be using this Brother 37-Stitch Strong and Tough Sewing Machine all the time now. There are sewing projects that I have been avoiding because my big sewing machine is so complicated. I won't be avoiding those projects anymore. This Brother sewing machine is so easy to use. It has 37 stitches including a button holer. And they are displayed clearly on the front of the machine. You just have to choose the stitch you want to use... and that's it! I like the fact that this Brother 37-Stitch Strong and Tough Sewing Machine is made very well and certainly is Strong and Tough like it says. It has a handle in the top to lift and carry. Although I have purchased a universal size sewing machine case from Walmart.com to store this machine although it does come with a dust cover if you want to keep it out all the time. It also came with a large piece of fabric to test the different stitches. It comes complete with six sewing feet, with a spring action zigzag foot, nonstick, blind stitch, zipper, buttonhole and button sewing feet. And heavyweight needles are included to handle multiple layers of heavier fabrics. I can't imagine anyone having a problem understanding and using this great Brother 37-Stitch Strong and Tough Sewing Machine. But if you have any problems it comes with an instructional DVD to help you out.
This machine is everything a novice or intermediate sewer could ask for. Great for simple sewing as well as fancy stitches. The Buttonhole foot, and the button foot makes it so easy to get the right size and make the fastening consistent. There are 37 different stitches and they are right on the machine. I just dialed the one I wanted and started sewing. The CD that is included helped me with the first-time threading, and gave some excellent tips for using and caring for the machine. I love sewing again. Didn't realize how much I missed it, but I am making up for wasted time.
Funny, after decades I found that Brother made more than just typewriters. That played to my advantage. Now it was time to get busy. From simple to difficult, my ‘little' Brother is a terrific friend. Denim can be a challenge, especially at the seams. Not with this puppy. Zippers...always a challenge. No longer the case scenario. For me, this machine was a little bit intimidating at first. But now by going thru various steps I feel like the worst is behind me. Have accomplished some tough projects. This sewing machine, nor myself, are going to give up. Really like the portability and the weight. Seams (seems-ha) to me this machine durable to handle anything you throw it. Back to an easy task: baby blankets & throws. Piece of cake. Sign me awestruck.
Wow! That's how I would describe the Brother 37-Stitch Strong and Tough Sewing Machine, ST371HD. This machine is amazing. I have sewn for over 25 years and whenever I tried to sew heavier materials like denim it felt like my regular machine was about to break. I had to push the material through, and often back up and go again, repeatedly until I maybe was able to complete the part I was working on. I never would have attempted to sew more than two layers of denim or other heavy materials together at one time because my normal machine wouldn't be able to do it. Not so with the Brother 37-Stitch Strong and Tough Sewing Machine, ST371HD. I sewed through the four layers of denim shown in the picture below all at one time and it felt like I was sewing lightweight material instead of two hems of denim, again all I can say is wow. This machine impressed me greatly not only at it's power and ability to sew heavy fabrics, but also at how lightweight it is. The machine weighs less than my Husqvarna machine, is very attractive looking, and yet is a workhorse sewing machine. Whether you are looking for an entry level machine, or something to do heavier projects, the Brother 37-Stitch Strong and Tough Sewing Machine, ST371HD is the machine for you and deserves my highest recommendation.
The Brother 37-Stitch Strong and Tough Sewing Machine has lived up to its name-strong and tough. The first project I used it on was hemming blue jeans. Past machines that I have owned have struggled with sewing through the layers of denim that you encounter when you hem jeans-skipping stitches and breaking needles. This machine sewed easily and beautifully even through the thickness at the seams. I also used it in sewing on some stretchy jersey material and found it fed the material evenly and without stretching resulting in very smooth seams and no puckering. I have experimented with several of the decorative stitches and have been pleased with all I have tried. I have an older Brother machine that used the buttonhole attachment for darning. This machine you just drop your feed dog and take off the presser foot for totally free feeding by hand. It was not as easy at first but I liked it better once I got the hang of it as I could darn any size area I needed. The machine is heavy and appears to have more metal parts than so many of the new machines so that makes it seem more durable to me. It is easy to thread, change bobbins and change stitches. I am very pleased with this machine and would highly recommend it. Written by retiredfarmerbob's wife.
I was pretty excited to get this Brother Sewing Machine from the Spark Reviewer Program as I really love sewing machines. Overall, I like this one pretty much! This machine claims to be "versatile, durable, and dependable" right on the outside of the box. It claims it can sew silk to denim and handle multiple layers of fabric. It claims it contains #11,14, and 16 size needles (it doesn't--only 14). It claims to have a smooth metal needle plate with engraved measurements for added precision. It claims to have a free arm for cuffs and sleeves. It claims it has 6 snap-on feet while it only has 5. It claims to have 37 built-in stitches. It claims to do a 1-step buttonhole. I tested the machine by making a woven cotton blouse (and using a few knit remnants). I did not like it at first because it seemed too difficult to guide it to get the right seam allowance and top stitch in the right place. THEN, I discovered that out-of-the-box it came with the needle in the right-hand position. This adjustment was made on the stitch width control. Once I figured out how to get the needle in the center position I truly enjoyed using this machine! It has excellent stitch quality which is more than I can say about most machines. I did hem a pair of jeans with it but I must say that it had great difficulty getting over the 4 layers of denim at the side seams (I had to turn the wheel by hand), so I'm not sure I'd say the "sews denim" claim is that accurate. As it stands, it kind of stalled on me while hemming regular cotton fabric at the side seams. I also tried to make a 1-step buttonhole and couldn't figure it out at all. It has a special foot for this and it just didn't work. I was able to make manual buttonholes. The selection of built-in stitches is very nice and easy to change between. It comes with 4 bobbins, a double-needle and an extra spindle to use for the extra thread when using it, caps to put at the top on large and small spools of thread, and a strange "screwdriver" which is needed when you change needles-- it's a little awkward. There's also a plastic soft cover for the machine. There's also a built-in needle threader that I couldn't figure out, but once I got the center needle position issue figured out, the threader was a godsend! You can purchase additional feet and bobbins and other items including a cleaning brush, hard case and any and all of the parts that originally come with it. So I'd say that this is a pretty decent sewing machine. Not quite as durable as they claim, but it sure does excellent stitching. I'd recommend it.
The Brother sewing machine is a very robust machine and looks more sturdy than my Husqvarna. It's shipping weight is 19 pounds. It measures 6 1/2" wide, 16" long and 12" high. It's white with dark grey lettering and accents and stitch patterns. The LED light is adequate. The throat opening from the presser foot to the body is about 5 3/4". There are three control wheels are on top and within easy access. They control tension, stitch width and stitch length and have easy to see numbers for reference. This machine is designed to do 37 different types of stitches and comes with a white vinyl cover and a parts bag that includes a tool to remove the needle, an assortment of presser feet, four bobbins and a few needles. A twenty minute DVD and a comprehensive manual are included to help the user get started sewing. This Brother machine can do some fancy functions that I probably won't ever get to try, but this machine will do the types of everday sewing that I need to do for years to come. Lastly there is a carrying handle permanently attached.
I found this machine much easier to thread than my other sewing machine. The DVD it comes with was very helpful and I am so pleased that it came with one. I took a screenshot of one of the scenes from the DVD. You get a bunch of different size needles in a little purse, there were also various zipper feet. The needles worked great with my pink jersey knit fabric. I was glad that the presser foot was a darker color, that way it doesn't show dirt as quickly. It also has a nice waterproof cover to keep dust from getting to the machine. I highly recommend this to anyone looking for a quality machine that isn't very difficult to setup and use and needs a visual aid to help guide them. With this Brother you won't have to go on the internet hoping to find videos posted of how to thread it.
Well built sturdy machine. Easy carry handle on top. Understand there is a case that can be purchased separately. Lots of instructions which need to be followed. This machine is a learning curve from a regular older machine. Instructions can be a little confusing. The bobbins are larger than normal. Must use only the correct size or they say damage to the machine can happen. Now saying the bobbin is larger means it holds more thread. In comparison the spools of thread sit at an angel and need to be held in by a disc that slides over the thin peg. Problem is there is no way to use a CONE thread. This I dont understand why a heavy duty machine in every other way will not hold a cone. I did call customer service and after 15 mins on hold got to talk with a rep. She said there is no way to use the cones on this machine so just lay it on the table next to the machine. Not acceptable! The free arm is big and difficult to get a sleeve over. It has a self thread feature but have to remember to have the wheel at a certain angle, the foot down and then hold the thread on the right with one hand while making a loop with the left AND pulling down the lever and slip the thread in the right spot...all at the same time. Im thinking its easier just to do it the old fashion way. Has 37 built in stitches which are changeable with the ease of a dial. One step button hole attachment. It does have a presser foot which lifts high allowing for thick layers of fabric. It also did very well with very thin fabric. Can do double stitching with two needles at the same time. Bobbins thread easy and evenly. The bobbin cover though is only a small piece of plastic. Instructions for threading in diagrams on the machine which helps as a reminder. The thread did break off and was lodged inside. I had to remove the pack panel with a screw driver to get to it. Hope that will not happen often and I think some of the issue was using a cone thread.
