Highly recommended! The focal distance of 50mm is very versatile so can be used for portrait and also can be used for some urban photography. This lens delivers a monster bokeh. I cannot praise it enough, I have RF glass (non-L) that cannot compete with this one.
This is a really beautiful piece of kit. I read the reviews here and on the various web fora and was obviously worried about the oft mentioned "back focusing" issue, but went ahead and bought one back in October 2009. My thinking was that I simply loved my Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM and, as it was the lens that was most often on my camera, I really wanted the best possible in this class, especially as I do like to shoot wide open around the home and indoors using natural light rather than flash. Needless to say, the lens is a bit of a beast in terms of size and weight when compared to the other 50mm lenses Canon makes (I have owned the 1.8, 2.5 and 1.4 at some stage over the last few years). But I love the stability that weight gives to you when you hold it in your hands. Shooting wide open does take a lot of getting used to given the razor thin DoF, and I have made sure to use the centre point on my 5DMkII and 50D for best results. The results in portraits can be beautiful though with a slightly soft dreamy effect wide open (which has been improved with practice). The lens gets nicely sharp around 2.0 and tack sharp at 2.8. However, the whole deal with sharpness to me is second to the ability to be able to get the shot in the first place. That's where the 1.2 excels. Regarding the "back focus issue" I went through the process of microadjusting all my lenses using this relatively easy yet effective method explained here: [...]. It turned out my 50mm 1.4 was focusing much more than my 1.2. I think the 50mm 1.4 was something like -15 and the 50mm 1.2 was -3. It seemed to be a consistent issue with my primes (though to varying degrees). My zooms were all pretty much spot-on. Simply must be to do with the wide apertures of the primes as DoF becomes thinner and thinner. 1.2 is as wide as it gets these days. The biggest caveat with this lens is, of course, the price. For that reason, I would say the best deal in terms of picture quality, low light ability, etc. is the Canon EF 50mm 1.4 USM. I still love that lens and have kept it for back-up and for whenever I need to travel. It really is a great piece of glass for the price. The 1.2 L is just that bit better though and, for my business, that's what I need to have. Pros: Great low-light ability at lower ISOs Fast focus Amazing build quality Contrast and colours are beautiful Bokeh is gorgeous even when stopped down (with nicely rounded aperture blades) Feels nice and solid in your hands when shooting in low light without tripod 1/2 stop faster than the Canon EF 50mm 1.4 USM Cons: Heavy Expensive Takes some time to master using wide open Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM offers comparable image quality (though half a stop slower and less well built).
I purchased this lens just before Christmas and I absolutely love it! Images are tack sharp and the background blur is stunning.
This is one of Canon's best lenses. The construction is superb, it feels wonderful and auto focus accurate and fairly fast. The massive aperture is great if you know what to do with it. Ideal uses: With the f/1.2 aperture this is great for low light shots, especially indoors or at a concert or nightclub where flash would be bad. It is often used for doing product photography such as plates of food in magazines. The depth of field is tiny wide open. The lens also can be used for portrait photography, though most pros rave about the 85-135mm lenses, finding the 50mm a bit short. As with all of Canon's 50mm lenses, this is difficult to use manually as the DOF is so narrow. It's just hard to focus accurately sometimes. I have photos where the eyebrows are sharp but the eyes out of focus with the 50mm f/1.4. This lens is even finer. For that reason I would only use this lens on a camera body that can do individual lens microadjustments (like the 1D Mk III, 5D MkII and the 50D) so that that DOF falls precisely where you want it. Wide open, you get that DOF, but it also isn't as sharp as you might have hoped for this much money. The Canon 50mm f/1.4 is almost as wide, but costs roughly 1/5 as much. I love this lens, and after trying it out I do covet it, but logically I can't recommend it with it's little brothers out there for vastly cheaper sums. All in all, it's a wonderful lens. My issue is that the benefits are to few (or precise) for most normal photographers. Only a professional with very exacting needs would take advantage of that extra 1/3 stop in the aperture, and could justify the extra cost of this lens just for those reasons. I knocked a couple stars for expectations, as I would hope for something blindingly sharp, and for value as the cheaper ones do almost the same thing
I am a wedding photographer & it captures my clients day perfectly! I trust it's efficiency in low light situations. It's lightweight & easy to store in my bag. Only bad thing is I have to back up a little more than I'm used to to get it to focus on details, but I can certainly live with that! Super happy I added this to my collection!
You need to be cognizant of the focus point you want when composing your image. If your well versed in photography you'll love this beautiful lens.

I've had this lens for a number of years now. I've read reviews critical of its ability to focus. This is not a newbie lens, nor does it matter how many years a person has been shooting if those years do not include experience with lenses this unique. Success with this lens hinges entirely on the user's ability and understanding, especially of focus shift at close ranges and wide apertures which is endemic in lenses of this type. This lens is capable of is astonishing images.
