A modern day update to a versatile, compact and lightweight wide-angle lens, the EF 35mm f/2 IS USM is incredibly bright and offers image stabilization, superb image quality and construction perfect for use on any EOS digital camera. With a redesigned mechanical and optical structure, the EF 35mm f/2 IS USM features a GMo aspherical lens element for high image quality with improved performance in the periphery. It incorporates a rear focus system and ring-type USM for faster, more precise autofocus performance. Full-time manual focus enables manual focusing while in AF mode, a micro-stepping drive provides quieter operation and a low speed focus drive delivers optimal results for video shooting. Canon Optical Image Stabilizer system delivers the equivalent effect of 4 stops and can detect normal shooting or panning, and automatically switches to the optimal IS mode. Compact and lightweight, the EF 35mm f/2 IS USM has an 8-blade circular aperture diaphragm for soft backgrounds, a minimum focusing distance of 0.79 ft./0.24m, plus optimized lens coatings for minimized ghosting and flare.
Wide-angle 35mm f/2 lens is designed for full-frame Canon EF-mount DSLRs, however can also be used with APS-C models where it provides a 56mm equivalent focal length. Bright f/2 maximum aperture benefits working in low-light conditions and also affords significant control over depth of field for working with selective focus techniques. One glass-molded aspherical element helps to suppress spherical aberrations and distortion for a high degree of sharpness and accurate rendering. Super Spectra coating has been applied to individual elements to minimize ghosting and flare for greater contrast and color neutrality when working in strong lighting conditions. An Optical Image Stabilizer helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to four shutter speed stops to better enable working in low-light conditions and with slower shutter speeds. A ring-type Ultrasonic Motor (USM), along with a rear focusing system, is employed to deliver fast and precise autofocus performance as well as full-time manual focus override. Additionally, a micro-stepping drive also provides quiet focusing performance and a low-speed focus drive is used to benefit video recording applications. Rounded eight-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.

I likely have 12-15 Canon lenses. This and the new 85mm IS are my favorite primes. It is just tack sharp and wonderful for low light situations. It has a nice size and feel. I just shot some music in a dark club (video) using my 80D and it looks great. Nice to have that f2 in low light situations. Typically I use it for stills on my 5D4 or 5D3 but it is just a wonderful lens. Great to have the IS as well. Easy to shoot at 1/2 second hand held when there is no movement in the scene. Absolutely love this lens!
Purchased this lens about 6 months ago and have been blown away by the quality. I shoot on a 7d (cropped sensor) so this lens actually ends up being closer to a 50mm for AP-C shooters. I use this mainly for model/portrait photography as well as videography. The Image stabilization is a huge plus and the focus ring is smooth and consistent. This is by far the best lens I own.
Since I am a professional photographer, I must be able to count on my lenses to produce excellent images under wide-ranging conditions. Outstanding optics, robust and durable build quality are givens for me. This particular lens, however, has a couple feature which make it the best 35mm available for my work. Having such a wide aperture (f/2.0) allows me to shoot many events without flash! That can be big to my clients. Also, having IS at this (kinda-wide) focal length gives me distinct advantages: (1) it plays into the non-flash event scenario. (2) it makes a wonderful lens for video. Additionally, I can get beautiful short DOF shots with this baby. It's almost like a little brother to my 85mm f/1.2. If you have a need for 35mm (who doesn't?), this one rocks!
That's the lens I've been waiting for, for so many years! A 35mm fast lens, with a very good build and optical quality, with an efficient stabilizer and a fast, nearly silent AF. A dream came true. After a few weeks with this lens, I immediately sold my 35/1,4 L. Image quality is at the same level, but now I have a stabilizer and faster AF. Obviously I lost the f/1,4 and I have more vignetting until f/4, but... I can deal with that. Downsides? - Strong vignetting until f/3.5 (still visible after that, but not so annoying). - No tropicalization. - Despite the price, no lens hood included... as usual. If this lens had less vignetting wide open and a water/dust/moist/all-weather protection, it would be just perfect. Waiting for a 35/1,4 L IS with improved image quality, IMHO that's the best 35mm in the Canon lineup.
I recommend this as the best Canon lens for anytime anywhere photography. If you are confused of which lens is the most suitable for you, anytime and anywhere, especially if you own a full frame, this is your best choice. If you are beginner or hobbyist, this lens brings the best in you. The lens is very sharp and fast. Only draw back I see is the vignetting.
Picture quality and sharpness is much better than expected based on the MTF Chart. Suitable, at large aperture, for indoor photos of moving objects that require fast shutter times. Short minimum focal length, fast USM, and very effective IS make this an ideal "Grandkids" lens. Fine detail for outdoor/landscape photography. It is important that you use your camera's Peripheral Illumination Correction as otherwise you will see significant vignetting. This being a newer lens, you may have to first update your version of EOS Utility in order to register the lens' Peripheral Illumination Correction Data. Do buy the original Canon Lens Hood - some aftermarket products simply do not work well on this lens.
I picked up this lens about 2 weeks ago to use on my 6D. Sharp as can be, excellent color rendition. One note using it wide open at f2.0 the lens produces a lot of vignetting on the corners, it completely goes away at f4.0. Using it wide open is not an issue because it can be easily removed in post production.
I like the lens very much for general shooting purposes. It seems to be average in a lot of qualities; not excellent or terrible in any aspect. For low light or close focusing the IS is a great feature. The lens is light weight, and the manual focus ring is much more dampened compared to the 35L. I think it's a nice upgrade to the old f2, but the price is high.
This lens is simply amazing. The only advantage the L lenses have on this lens is the weather sealing and that's never been a problem. The auto focus is fast, the IS helps and it's a great lens for low light. Where this lens is amazing is the sharpness, clarity and the colors it produces. Colors just pop. I haven't noticed the vignetting others mention but, as they say, that's easily correctable. Images are sharp to the edges and I'm definitely going to start using this lens more.
Classic lens for portraits and landscape, really anything! So many options for the f-stop, nice big apertures too! Makes the focusing difficult though if you are not experienced, but therefore makes it a great lens for beginners learning the basics and the techniques of still life and portrait photography!
