Distinguished by its fast design and IS capabilities, the EF 85mm f/1.4L IS USM from Canon is a short telephoto prime well-suited to portraiture applications. As an L-series lens, it is characterized by a sophisticated optical layout that includes one glass-molded aspherical element to greatly reduce spherical aberrations and distortion for improved sharpness and clarity. Individual elements also feature an Air Sphere coating (ASC) to suppress lens flare and ghosting for greater contrast and color fidelity in backlit situations. Complementing the optical attributes, this lens also incorporates a four stop-effective optical image stabilization system that minimizes the appearance of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting. A ring-type Ultrasonic Motor (USM) also affords quick and accurate autofocus performance, along with full-time manual focus override for fine-tuned control. Additionally, as with all L-series lenses, this 85mm f/1.4 has a dust- and weather-resistant construction, as well as a fluorine coating on exposed elements, to benefit its use in harsh environmental conditions.

Bought 85 14L, the item arrived in a good package and the shipment is fast. The lens shows great sharpness all the way to wide open. The auto focus is fast, accurate and quiet.

I rented this lens a week ago. I was weary about purchasing such a weighty lens(both literal weight and price-wise.) Long story short, I bought this lens after my first shoot. I ended up really loving the weight of the lens! The autofocus is silent and super pristine. It will be a great addition to my business! I couldn't be more impressed with Canon!
You really need to decide upon your focus point when using it wide open.
Quite simply...this is an outstanding lens. Typical Canon quality I have come to expect after shooting Canon for 30+ years. This is a marked improvement over the 85mm 1.2 II. Lighter, and faster focusing, not to mention the added Image Stabilization...a great tool to have. I do not notice much of a loss of Bokeh from the 1.2 to 1.4 f stop. Color and Contrast are wonderful! The IS really works as I can typically shoot handheld down to 1/25 or 1/15 with no issues. Adding this to my 5D MKIV or my EOS R makes a perfect walking around lens, and for studio use it really shines. Add this lens to your gear, you won't be disappointed.
Finally, an image-stabilized, weather-sealed 85mm! Fast and accurate focusing (much faster than the 1.2), sharp images, dreamy bokeh with that 3-D pop, and simply more versatility than the 1.2 makes this a winner. This does show a moderate amount of vignette at 1.4, but it's very gradual, and clears up by 2.8. Almost as fat, but longer than the 1.2, it is balanced better. This is the 85mm I've been dreaming of, and now it's mine!
I am not a professional, but could tell immediately the professional quality of this lens. It ads a new dimension in composition with its extremely shallow depth of field. Automatic focus is truly a snap. I've shot outdoor portraits of grandchildren and the outcomes are brilliant. Couldn't be more pleased with this lens. Price is relative when considering how often you will use this lens and the quality of the resulting pictures.
This lens is the best lens I've ever owned. It is so sharp and the autofocus is super fast. I couldn't be happier.
Excelent portrait lens, I also use it for some landscape picture. Auto focus is very fast, and the picture is very sharp. Overall I like the image quality of the lens.
