I have never liked claying my car, mainly because the clay I have used in the past (expensive) was hard as a rock and difficult to work with. I decided to try CG medium clay and was pleasantly surprised. Nice size bar, clayed an SUV and my sedan with 1/4 of it. The product itself was just the right firmness making kneading it easy. Contaminants were lifted thoroughly. Very pleased.
Initially this clay bar is much softer, and tackier than the yellow clay bar by Chemical Guys, or similar bars. I bought this clay bar to use specifically for taking contaminants off of the windows of our vehicles. Initially I sprayed a similar amount of Chemical Guys clay lube as I had used with their yellow bar, but quickly realized the gray has much more tack, and required more clay luber. I used the same 1/4 bar to decontaminate my car's windows, and the window's on my son's car. It does absorb the clay lube somewhat which is a benefit as it becomes softer and more pliable and requires less lube to do the same job as you work.
My boyfriend's car, 2002 black on black Trans Am convertible, has never had a clay bar used on it before. This middle grade version pulled out the swirls and the paint looked great afterwards. We put on a ceramic coating, from Chemical Guys, and the black color just pops. It was a little work but so worth it!!
I'm trying to bring back to life my 2006 Lexus lx470. It has white paint so at first it was hard to see the contaminates but when I was done with using a piece of clay bar I could see how dirty my car was.
I have used other clay bars that were light and did not get the results the grey bar got. I used the last one on a 2004 Ford Freestar van that looked like it needed heavy compounding. After using this product i was able to lightly compound the car to a mirror shine. Before taking your car to a shop that is going to charge over a hundred dollars to do the same thing you can do under the shade of a tree or in a garage. Try this bar and lube first and make the call yourself. Impressed!
I would consider myself a novice detailer, and must say I am confused why this product has such bad reviews. I have a variety of CG products, in fact my entire detail shelf is filled with CG products. I have used both the yellow OG bar, and the gray. I must say for the average daily driver this is my go to bar! This bar is amazing at taking off any, and all types of tar, road grime, and years of contaminants. I have tried the OG yellow bar on vehicles that have never been clayed, and the amount of extra effort to remove contaminants is much more time consuming. Do yourself a favor a keep one of these on your detail shelf. Use the OG for newer vehicles, or light touch up jobs, use the gray for older vehicles, and cars with heavy contaminants. the time saved is well worth the cost.
I use this product along with Chemical guys clay lube. Spray a liberal amount of lube onto a 2x2 area and begin working the clay bar in a cross hatch pattern. Don't let the lube dry on its own or allow the clay bar to start sticking to the vehicles exterior, if either of these happen make sure to spray more lube. This product will leave your vehicles clear coat feeling and looking great!
I bought 2 yellows, a grey and a black and I'm really impressed with just the yellow, no need to go further than that, comparing to a light bar from other companies that I only have experience with, you don't need to push at all to get the results you need, I now want to try CG light bar for comparison, man should have just bought one of those with my order as well
At first I was kind of nervous about it but so glad I decided to order the chemical guys clay bar and do it myself. I went medium grade on my 2012 vehicle. It made a massive improvement. Easy to use. I recommend this to all vehicles, I wash my truck 2 times a week and still got a tremendous amount of contamination out of the paint, really brought the shine to my truck and was a great prep for the white light wax!! Awesome product. Will be ordering another to follow up again in a few months.
So, this is just another hunk of clay. Very malleable, a little piece, (about a 1/4 of the brick) goes a long way. But the price is too much for clay. There is much cheaper clay out there people.
