This radio has many features that I like. Ex: Bluetooth, repeat the last 20 seconds of the previous message, floatable, etc.... So far, it has passed the dunk test and still worked after the offshore fishing trip. We will keep testing on it.
This is a great radio all the features you would want and blue tooth.
I used this all last week at the coast. Radio held up great to the salt water when kayak fishing and had excellent wind and noise reduction from the winds 50 miles out in gulf on the boat. Blue Tooth feature is great for locking up phone in dry box and talking through the radio, great clarity. Still figuring out all the features but would recommend this to anyone looking for a durable handheld. I only wish it had a weather channel
The radio works great and that's why I would recommend to anyone unless you are looking to have an earpiece and mic. I use them so the radio isn't being heard around the boat. This unit has a 2.5 mm plug in so you have to by adapters to get to a more standard 3.5mm plug.
Bought this for a Stand Up Paddleboarding flat water exploring trip/vacation in Tampa Bay. Bluetooth function allowed me to communicate with concerned family when I didn't return at expected time. iPhone in waterproof case in my jacket, radio clipped to my hydration pack, while paddling, other party could hear clearly and communicate effectively. This makes it worth the price. If using other times as a phone, clever idea is to hold it to your head like a phone, just flip it upside down so antenna faces ground because of the mic and speaker placement on the radio and it works as good and clear as the phone as my callers said while testing. Also, with iPhone, double tapping Bluetooth button allows voice control to speak specific contact to call so making calls works also, just speak slowly and clearly and use precise contact info to make the call to the correct contact. It may take some practice doing this, but again, to not have to unease your phone to use while on the water makes it worth the price. I have not yet tested the waterproof and float, but I'm sure it's good to go. Be careful to have the hand mic jack cover closed properly. Manual says may not float with battery tray depending on weight of AA batteries used, so word of caution, floating only rated for use with rechargeable battery pack. Other pluses: NOAA marine weather on repeat was nice to listen too while paddling to break the silence of paddling solo from time to time. Scan function too, especially being able to hear nearest Coast Guard station radio announcements. Battery life, so far, seems to be good on a new, fully charged battery. Manual still suggests to keep a spare set of batteries and the sled on hand in case, prudent move to do for sure. Paddling for an hour or two at a time and battery icon barely moved. On to the ok things. Other reviews say it is not loud enough for power boating, but for paddling it is plenty loud enough to communicate. Also they say range isn't that great, but again for paddling inland bays and nearshore it should be plenty. Ok, so what's not so great. Honestly, at this time really only the belt clip seems the tiniest flimsy to me. Again, just having it clipped to my pack and not being subjected to any rough treatment it will probably be ok for what I'm using it for. Now that I have it, I won't go without it again.
So far so good! Just got it and it all checks out nice. I'll make another post after we've used it for awhile.
Great VHF radio, Bluetooth feature is great. Being able to stow your phone and still take calls is very useful. Only downside is the menu setup is not simple, if your out on the water and need to change settings and do t have the manual good luck! All that said I would recommend this product, does want it says on the box.
I work on tug boats and wanted a smaller marine radio than the brick that they gave me. The playback feature on here is handy. if I have to run down into the engine room (where you can't hear a radio) I can always come up and click the playback to see if I missed anything. My only complaint is that it could be a bit louder. The bluetooth is also handy, but maybe more so on a fishing boat than a tug boat.
First, this is a great vhf radio. But there are some quirky things that you might like to know... First is that it allows you to connect a cell/mobile phone via bluetooth which could save your phone from a dunking. I was expecting to be able to use it with a BT headset as well, but no. You can buy their own headset but you can't use an existing BT headset. Shame. I haven't tried the phone feature and probably won't use that capability. The charging stand is fiddly. You can either have the insert to the stand in, in which case you can charge the lithium battery by itself or take it out and have the whole VHF unit in the stand. But getting the battery out is a little fiddly as you need to undo a screw. Sure this helps with the waterproofness but makes it clumsy to remove. Would only do it if I needed to use the 5AA battery pack blank that they provide for emergencies. You can have either mains or 12v charging, but you have to use the stand to charge. No way to connect the battery directly to the handset. Again probably helps with waterproofness but I now need to buy a second stand. I want to be able to charge using 12v on my boat and then bring the unit home and charge via mains charging. Manual is clear. You get a good selection of accessories in the box. But I would have liked to know that the stand is essential to charging and would have bought a second at the time to avoid more shipping charges. They also make a big deal about bluetooth and maybe the use case is what others want, but I would have liked the option to use my own BT headset.
Radio started out great. I loved the features, battery life, etc... Unfortunately during the second season of use the display stopped working. The unit has never been dropped or submersed in water but still quite working. With all of the features and functions of the radio navigating them without a display is impossible. I am currently contacting Cobra's customer service to see if they can replace the unit. Otherwise I am looking for a replacement.
