Nice little player

I have a dozen portable CD players but none will play the audiobooks that are in the MP3-CD format. This one does and it does it well. I tried a bunch of other CD players that the clerks in various stores told me would play this format - all for much more than this one - and none did. I'm a happy camper.

Works great ~ does everything I want. I bought it for its size. I don't have much room for something bigger on my nightstand, so the size is perfect for me. I also purchased an RCA universal AC adapter for it, so I could keep it plugged in instead of using batteries.

Listen while you work

I purchased this product to be able to listen to CD's containing MP3 recordings - I wasn't able to find many portable CD players with that feature. I haven't explored the use of all the control features but I am able to select the proper track and play and pause it as necessary. I put it in a case with a shoulder strap so I am able to wear it as I work and listen through the headphones without disturbing anyone else. Volume and clarity seem good but I am using it for spoken work rather than music. The door for the battery compartment may be a weak point, it needs to be treated with care.

I purchased it for occasional use only and it will serve that purpose well. I would not depend on it for a lot of constant use.. it is not built for that.

Objectively Evaluating the MP3 Capability of the C

Reviewed in the USA on 2009-05-02T17:00:00

In several online posts this particular MP3 CD player has received several negative reviews, many of which I feel unjustifiably so, its MP3 capability in particular. Priced at under $30 retail though definitely not an MP3 CD player intended to serve the very high end digital audio market, but most certainly more than adequate for the majority of household uses providing you adhere to and don’t exceed the manufactures specifications which we’ll examine more closely. Looking at the manufactures specifications listed on the last page of the Instruction manual we find 2 key pieces of data that’s going to help us unravel the MP-CD521’s MP3 capabilities and they are as follows; a 1-Bit D/A Converter (a.k.a. Digital to Analog Converter or DAC for short) and an 8 times Sampling Rate. In order to clarify we’ll first examine the 1-Bit DAC specification. In the early days of digital audio both 14-bit and 16-bit DAC’s were commonly used throughout the industry. Upon further examination turning to Wikipedia we find that a 1-Bit DAC is defined as 16-20 Bits, so far so good, now let’s apply some simple math to what we now know. 1 x 16 x 8 = 128 or (128-bit rate) 1 x 20 x 8 = 160 or (160-bit rate) Looking at the results of our above calculations we now know that the maximum acceptable bit rate at which our device is capable of processing digital audio data is 160-bit rate, again, with our emphasis being acceptable audio quality as the end result. So we can now conclude that in order to stay within the manufactures specifications all MP3’s compiled for this particular device SHOULD NOT EXCEED a 160-bit rate, based on my own personal experience, any bit rate above 160 simply overwhelms a 1-Bit DAC with an 8x Sampling Rate, simply put, it’s the laws of physics being applied here. One other quirk with regards to this particular player is the fact that it often times has difficulty reading an MP3 CD with more than 6 file folders. Unfortunate solution here is to restrict your MP3 file compilation to 6 or less file folders for best results and listening pleasure. In summary, the Coby MP-CD521 is a relatively cheap and inexpensive MP3/CD Player for general use, and though not suitable for Hi Def Digital Audio, it is more than adequate for most other household applications and needs. For all my MP3 compilations I use the freely distributed CDex CD Audio Extraction Software in combination with Nero for writing the MP3 CD. I hope this evaluation proves helpful in some small way, thanks.

What I wanted

I wanted a CD player that was built to last, and that had a hold button on it. Most of the players do not have that feature. It keeps all buttons locked - except the volume - so they can't accidentally be pushed. I sleep with the CD player under my pillow and the headphones on, so the weight of the pillow would turn it off or change channels if not for the hold button.

With so few CD players out there it was very hard to find any now a days. This one I use for music lessone. And it preforms great. The only thing hard to get used to is the automatic shut off.

The player's primary and really only use is for my audiobooks. I play a book a day, so my concern is if the player will survive the daily use. So far so good. The quality is great, so barring burn out, this is a good buy.

Good Bang for the Buck

Got this player in my hands for under $20. Works as advertised, but the tiny display doesn't leave room for decent sized fonts or folder descriptions. I stuff it in the pouch of my Milwaukee Job Site Radio, and plug it into the auxiliary input. Doesn't get banged around performing that duty. I don't intend to abuse it, to see how much it can take before it breaks. Well worth what I paid for it.

Results are that it works fine with good battery retention. No optional equipment manual or order form was included with player so I have to visit the website to get the AC transformer to save batteries when using at home. Behind the head headphones are ok but I use Sony over the head enclosed studio monitor headphones. Random play seems to be the same random each time which I wish was different.
