I bought this when our local recycling center quit taking #5 plastic tubs. I now make yogurt weekly in this yogurt maker. While I was a bit surprised at first that I had to warm the milk on the store first, I've gotten used to it. It works perfectly, every time. The feature I appreciate the most is that it cools the yogurt when it is done fermenting. I can set it and forget it, and if it finishes in the middle of the night, it is kept cool until morning.
I have been using this yogurt making for a month. The recipe that works the best for me is the one that comes in the Cuisinart Recipe Booklet on pg 2 "Plain Yogurt Variation #1." I use grass-fed whole milk, Peak dry milk, and have used yogurt starters from the Cultures for Health (Mild & Traditional) and Natural Probiotic Selection (Acidophilus). I think the two Cultures for Health's starters I have tried made the yogurt a little thicker than NPS starter. I ferment for 9-10 hours.
I like the cooling feature of this machine. I did find that I prefer to heat the milk to 185, and then bring down to 110 before I added the starter. I have a strainer also. It did well by just putting the ingredients in, and pushing the button, but I prefer a thick yogurt, so I do the prep first. I love homemade yogurt!! I had another yogurt maker, and nothing is wrong with it, but the cooling feature is great when I won't be around when the fermenting is done. I'm very pleased with my purchase. My wife and me have had our Cuisinart CYM-100 for over a month now and we have seriously enjoyed the best yogurt of our lives. We both love Greek yogurt but truly did not know what great yogurt really tasted like until now. We simply put 4 cups of whole milk, 1/2 cut dried non fat milk and 1/3 cup yogurt from previous batch, set it for 8 hours and forget it. The next morning we have really smooth and wonderful thick creamy yogurt that is so much better than store bought. Highly recommend to anyone who wants to enjoy the best yogurt possible.
Just made my first batch of yogurt and it turned out perfectly. Used the instructions in the book for Greek yogurt, and it turned out just perfect.
This yogurt maker is definitely worth the cost, especially if you plan on making lots and lots of yogurt! I originally bought it because I have kids, so wanted to avoid glass jars which I know would eventually shatter on my hard tile floors. The large capacity container appealed to me because it is PLASTIC (not glass!) and is easier to clean than a bunch of small containers. I also like that I can use a whisk on my (soy)yogurt right in the container which you can't do with small jars. It made great yogurt on the first try! That being said, the cooling feature is really convenient. With my busy schedule I don't have to worry about how I time making my yogurt. I set the number of hours and then it counts down and when done it starts to cool it, so it won't over-culture. You can also increase or decrease the time at any point or put it straight into cooling mode if needed. PRO's 1) Big container is easier to whip yogurt and clean. 2) Container is plastic so no glass shattering if that is a concern. 3) Timer and cooling feature is highly convenient. Yogurt won't over-culture. 4) Extra containers can be purchased from the company if needed. A few MINOR drawbacks: 1) I wish the timer countdown was more than just the # of hours, but minutes as well. 2)The lid to the container does not snap on (could spill if someone unknowingly tries to take it out of the fridge) and is a little awkward to lift and take off. 3) The unit does put off some heat from the side vents and also the front metal area especially when it is cooling, if this is a concern. 4) The unit cools but only in the 42-50 some degree range (states this in the booklet). So it is not really chilled enough to eat (my preference), still have to put it in fridge after.
Extremely happy with this buy. Bought one initially, got so impressed, later bought 2 more to make 1 gallon (1.5 liter x 3) yogurt at a time for the 10-14 days need.
I've used this since purchased and love it. Easy as come be and consistenly turns out yogart the way I like it. I add 1/2C powered milk for increased calcium as I have osteoporsis and 2T of either tapico (preferred) or cornstarch to the standard measurements and set it for either or 13 or 14 hours as I like firmer yogart and don't time or desire to strain and the tarter version. I top it with my homemade granola and this is breakfast very morning. It stays with me so I'm not hungry til lunch. What a great appliance!
Really enjoy my daily yogurt. It makes enough for me to fill 4 small mason jars for morning breakfast. Wish it made more! You can adapt for tartness and I make mine mild - about 7 hrs and then cooling 6hrs. So I can make it at 6pm and it's ready at 7am. This is my second machine, first one died after two years of twice weekly use but it was under warranty so I got a replacement one.
I'm excited to be making my own yogurt with the milk of my choice but have been having a hard time figuring out the best amount of cooking time. Unfortunately the instruction manual is not much help. Trial and error for the past month has not endeared me to the product. Will keep on trying since the taste is good and I still enjoy the convenience and cost savings the machine provides.
