seriously impressed. I'm SO happy with my purchase.
I installed 7 of these speakers in my outdoor patio 3 years ago. They install easily, with lots of possible orientations. No maintenance, no cleaning, and they still sound great. Some of mine are exposed to the elements directly, some are not. The bass response is good, but will still sound best when complimented with an outdoor sub (JBL has some options). Someone (ok, it was me) threw a Nerf football and hit one of the speakers. The speaker grill was majorly dented, but the sound was not affected. I called DT customer support and they sent me a replacement grill free of charge. You can't beat that.
Bought these speakers after a demo and liked the way they sounded. Got them home and mounted them on the back of the house. I live in southern ontario so I was concerned about leaving them out all winter. So I wrapped them up over this terrible winter, and just opened them back up today. Work like a charm. Looking foward to some +5 deg weather this weekend and getting some yard work done while listening to music again. Great bass and a really full sound.
These outdoor speakers sound very nice on our back patio. We're fortunate to have a covered portico where we were able to mount them vertically with opposing side walls to reflect passive radiator bass sound equally. We have an older Yamaha Aventage A/V receiver which provides 150 watts per channel to our zone 2 Def Techs, controlled wirelessly through the Yamaha controller app. The speakers play background music sweetly at low volume, and really pump out nice, full range sound when cranked up. Bass is quite good at party volume. Have to be very careful not to get kicked out of the neighborhood! Very happy with our purchase.
This is my second pair of these and I'll be ordering a third to complete my system. Amazing sound, well worth the investment! 3rd year on my first pair without issue.
AW6500

I owned a pair of BP6 speakers 10 years ago, so I have some experience of the quality of Definitive Technology speakers. Recently I was in the market for outdoor speakers and decided to give the AW6500 from Definitive Technology a go and boy I'm glad I did! For an all-weather speaker, the dynamic range and low frequency performance blows me away. I foresee many years of enjoyment of these speakers on my deck. Highly recommended.
You won't be disappointed. These speakers sound great with as little as 50 watts per channel but really shine when you can give them 100+. I have mine powered by an Emo XPA 5 with 200 watts per channel and they sound almost as good as my Dahlquist DQ-10s. Excellent bass for such a small speaker, great imaging and transparency. I have mine sitting on a stone retaining wall and the bass is awesome. The only thing I can fault them on is they sound a little bright but you may be able to eq it out. Not that big of an issue though. The speakers are very accurate so you can definitely hear the difference that hi res audio files make (e.g. 24/96 or 24/192 files). I left mine out in the rain exposed to the elements and they do fill up with water. Just shook it out and they were fine. Probably good to keep them protected or bring them inside during a big storm if you can. They are also solidly built. All metal, no plastic.
My set-up consists of a Pioneer Elite VSX-23, zone 2 powering (2) DT 6500's to my front patio (30' x 30'). My speaker placement is under the eves against the wall (bass radiator reflecting to the wall) and the speakers centered and projecting to my listening area. After some break-in, the speakers really shine at moderate volume's producing balanced, clean sound that's fills my listening space. The Hi's are crisp, Mid's are detailed and the Bass is strong. Crank up the power and at high volumes you can projected another 100 feet beyond. The speakers look and sound great and hide well under the eve's...
I have these hooked for about 2 weeks. They are hooked up to the emotiva PT1 and emotiva A-300 amp. They sound clear and great at lower volumes, but if you play at a higher volume (which is what we like) the base becomes harsh and crackles. I even called def tech before ordering to be sure the speakers would pair well with my emotive equipment. So I'm going to assume it's a speaker issue not a component issue.
I used to love these speakers. They were great up until now. My left speaker has only the tweeter working, so I checked the receiver. It was ok, so I took apart the speaker and found that the small capacitor on the board rusted right off. So much for weatherproof.
