Discovery Branded products are exceptional when it comes to teaching science to children of all ages. This Discovery Crystal Growing Set was no exception to this fact. The package comes with a poster that explains the crystal making process, and how crystals are formed. The package comes with an easy step by step instruction sheet that provides exact steps to follow to ensure crystals will grow. The package contains everything you need to grow your own crystals (except water). I gave this Crystal Growing Set to my grandchildren ages 12,10 and 7, and let them work together to follow the instructions and grow their own crystals. The first step was to boil water. This seems like a no-brainer to adults, yet kids who have no kitchen experience didn't have a clue on what to do. This crystal growing set not only helped them learn the science behind crystal making, but also basic essentials in homemaking (boiling water). They had to figure out how much water was needed, and how to know when water was actually boiling. It was a fun process to watch as they learned. It has only been one day since they started the crystal growing process, so I have no actually pictures of the crystals yet, but they are so excited to see how this entire process works, and know that they worked together to get the crystal making process started. This is a great science set for groups of kids who want to work together, and for most ages, because the older kids teach the younger ones throughout the process. Excellent science based set and well worth the money.
My kids had fun mixing the solution and putting the seeds in. We let the crystals sit for about 5 days before we took a picture of them. They are growing quite nicely. I expected them to be a little bigger, but I am still amazed that they grew at all. This is a cool little experiment for kids.
My 14 year daughter is into crystals and stones, so this was perfect for her. It was incredibly easy to set up. The directions were very easy and clear to understand. It took my daughter and I approximately 20 mins to set everything from start to finish, and that's because my daughter is every particular about everything. We cannot wait to see the results. Overall we had a blast working together on this.
These came a few days ago and they were well packaged and well protected. Two of my youngest grandchildren came over to (play) with gramma. First we read the directions then we watched a few videos so we made sure to do it correctly. They loved it and I enjoyed watching them have so much fun and hearing all the ooo's and ah's! Wonderful product.
We are a big supporter of science and STEM for kids, and believe it's never too young an age to learn. As such, we were excited to receive this item for our 6 year old. The packaging is simple and elegant, with bright colors. The instructions are simple enough - hot water, coloring, and the "seed" crystals. After mixing the ingredients, you are instructed to keep the tray in a dark area and leave it for several days. This is somewhat problematic because you have to find a fairly large area in a closet or cabinet and pray it doesn't tip over. Several days later (4), we are still not seeing significant or consistent results across the board. The blue bin is experiencing the most significant growth, the other two are somewhat underwhelming. The only explanation I can think of is that in Florida, we have a very high level of humidity, which might be impacting the experiment. This is particularly true as we have just entered into our wet season.

My daughter and I were so excited to get this Discovery Crystal growing set! We absolutely love crystals and couldn't wait to make our own. I really liked the packaging and how they included a cool informative poster about crystals. My daughter now has that hanging in her room. However, this set couldn't be more disappointing and messy. We decided to do this outside since it requires a well ventilated area. We followed all instructions, but this just did not work for us. I boiled water to mix the crystal packet with, but the wooden sticks provided did not do a good job mixing the packet into the water. We couldn't get the powder to dissolve at all. The water cooled before it could be mixed completely. It was also super messy and got all over our outside table, and stained the wood orange. The kit does not provide any kind of lid for the solution to be covered under while you wait for the crystals to grow either, so by day 2 we had bugs and random things floating in the solution of our growing crystals. Some kind of cover would have helped prevent that and honestly I had no idea what to put over it without getting the solution on me or staining more of my things. I find the container that the solution goes in very flimsy as well, so don't even think about moving it once you have prepared everything. Perhaps putting it on a baking sheet before hand would have helped. But again, I would not want this solution on my baking pans in fear of contaminating my future food. We waited the 6 days, and couldn't have been more disappointed. We had no crystals whatsoever, but we did have bug soup. And it looks like the bugs mixed some of the colors together as well, so it was just one big mess and waste of time for us. Perhaps someone else had better luck, but this did not work for us. Overall I would not recommend it to anyone.
Bought this for my son since he loves rocks and crystals right now. He was upset at how it all turned out. The crystals did not form correctly after following every step by step and waiting a whole month. RIDICULOUS!
Got this set for my son. We followed the instructions correctly. The crystals are suppose to grow in 2-3 days. Its been more than a week, and there is no sign of any crystal growth. Attached are pictures of the solutions after a week (no crystals at all). Extremely disappointed. My son was looking forward, and checking these every few hours, and then gave up.
