A stirring tribute to the brave crews of the British tow-seater aircraft who saved in World War I, "The Eagle and The Hawk" realistically retells of the dangerous flying missions so vital to the overall war effort. Fredrich March stars as an ace American member of the Royal Flying Corps who, after losing five second-seat observers in tow months, is beginning to show the strain. Cary Grant is excellent in his role as a cynical observer whose pilot wing elude him after an unfavorable recommendation by March. As luck would have it, the intense rivals are assigned to fly together. Though their missions are successful, March is reluctant to embrace his hero status. His depression eventually escalates to an emotional climax whereby the true bonds of wartime brotherhood are realized. Carole Lombard and Jack Oakie also star, lending glamour and comic relief to this memorable homage hailed by (Halliwell's Film Guide" as "well done with unusually vivid dialogue and acting.".
