The Meade ETX-125PE is a well built instrument. The optics are excellent. However, the "smart finder" is pretty riny-dink. The finder is hard to setup and is not rigidly mounted to the main tube. The scope was well packed when it arrived and the included tripod is quite rigid. The instruction book leaves somthing to be desired.
For a GREAT portable scope, with good power and easy operation this is the scope to buy. While the directions aren't the best for getting the Auto Star to work, try Weasner's Mighty ETX web site for better directions. When calibrated right this scope hits the stars, planets, and other goodies with no problem. It's about as heavy and big as I'd go for a portable scope. AND you will be taking it places. This scope can really SEE. It won't be long before you are taking it to Dark Sky sites to really enjoy it. This scope will last a life time. I use it more than my LX50 10". Lots of goodies to get for it so it can grow with your intrest in Astronomy. The best part is you won't out grow this scope. I'm getting a 16" reflector and I will still be using this scope. It even works for beginng astro photography. You won't be dissapointed in this scope. Mead optics are even better than Celestron's or Orion's, you're going to love this scope.
As advertised, this is a lot of value in a small package. I was pleased with the service and price with Walmart. I was planning to buy a used telescope but at this price I couldn't have done much better and I get the assurances that come with a Walmart purchase. The optical system if very good for a scope this size. The tripod is a little wobbly and the self alignment of the scope takes a bit more work than what I expected from reading other reviews, but still a good buy overall.
