This is the only style & type of furnace filter that I buy. I have asthma, plus inside cats and so far I have found nothing better to use.
Like many of you, I too find it starts loosing it's effectiveness @ about 1 month. There are however, a couple of things you can do to prolong their life. 1) I vacuum them @ the end of one month, 2) then "LIGHTLY" spray them with endust, or whichever dusting brand you use, before I put it back in place. The endust traps more as it goes through. Yes, it's extra work, somewhat, but the time spent, outweighs the cost of buying new ones more often.
I have been buying (2) 1500's and (4) 1000's for many years for our, non carpet or pets, main home. At an average price $20 each, $120 plus tax every 3 months is going to get me to look at the DuPont, MERV 11 filters, for a much less cost in a $20-$25 multi (4) pack. FILtrete is a GOOD product, it is just pricing itself out of the MARKET. I will follow up in 4 months on my comparative results. Supply & Demand, free market.
