I was looking for a pretty good sized safe...but nothing too big to handle. This safe is the perfect size for what I needed. It is a bit heavy and hard to move around....make sure you have a dolly to help you move the safe to the location you would like. This safe has a 5 digit code...and a key needed to open it. It's not like a regular combination where you only pass each number once...so that takes a bit getting used to, but I think that helps with the security of the safe. All in all...I am happy with my purchase and am satisfied with the outcome.
I shopped a lot for a safe before my purchase. Sentry seemed like a better dollar value until I found one in person at Home Depot. Cheap and had plastic parts in the locking mechanism. This First Alert was far superior in every aspect. The only way it could be better is if it had a way to bolt it down. I used liquid nail. It's not going anywhere. Sam's club had a better price until you added the exorbitant shipping cost. And you can't pick it up in their store. Walmart is killer. Free "ship to store", only 4 days to get it, too. And a nice metal shelf that won't collapse.
This safe is easy to use and it perfect need to for the family
Just want to alert anyone buying this safe,to the fact i was about to return it,after 3 days and 3 people, all of which, unable to open it. As we were considering the daunting task of having to figure out how to get this returned,i had a brainstorm.. I decided to take the directions, pertaining to the combination given,to open the safe, which did not work and reverse them.. Instead of following directions, which for example, read "45 left,2 right,28 left,55 right" and simply reversed the lefts and rights and whola,it popped open!! The author must be "english challenged" and had the directions backwards,so to those about to return this, you need to reverse the direct in which they tell you to turn the dial and its' fine..
Will do the job and appears to be high quality! The manufacturer put a sticker on the front of the safe that when removed, left dried adhesive on the door. So I get adhesive remover to get it off, and off comes the paint. So, I have a safe that looks like CR*P. The product itself is what I expected.
the instructions printed on all three language owner's manuals had been significantly changed regarding how many turns to the right and left for the various numbers needed to open the safe. The corrected directions were printed on a small insert mixed in the other paperwork. Three people tried to open the safe many times without success. After a few hours of frustration and fears of having to return the unit, the insert was found. A stamp on the wrong directions in the owner's manuals directing the new owner to the insert would have been a professional and customer friendly touch. Otherwise the unit functions as described.
This is my second first alert safe. I have had my older mall one for 8-10 years and have had no problems with moisture or with the locks. There was one problem with it being dented on the side the door opens. Looked like it had been dropped sometime between being packaged and delivered. I had to take a hammer to bend the corner down enough to open the door on the safe.
Good safe at a great price. The biggest drawback is that you cannot mount this without void the fireproof rating. There is no mounting kit included. Though the description says there is one included. And, First Alert does not make one for it. So if you want a mountable safe this "ain,t" the one.
The combo lock is far superior quality to anything else I have seen, 4 number combo and key for entry. The kicker is, you can NOT mount it without voiding the fire protection.??? What good is a safe if the bad guys can carry it out the door? If you don't want to mount it, it's a very good quality safe. It weighs 150lbs by itself so one person could probably carry it out...he would need a strong back!
Hard to get open. The combination dial is too loose. You have to hold with one finger and turn dial with your other hand to open. It needs to be stiffer. Also it has a dent on it's side.
