This hot water heater blanket is rated R10, which is the best I could find. We discovered our hot water heater was working way too hard during the last 0° cold snap at Christmas time. When the bill came in it was more than double, so Hubs said we need to insulate it. After looking everywhere, I found this Frost King hot water heater blanket that was good for up to a 60 gallon tank, with a insulation factor of R10 which was the highest around. We just got finished installing it this afternoon and it works great. It comes with all the tape you need and good directions. It only took us a half an hour and there was plenty of insulation left over. Frost King is a well-respected name brand and we seem to be buying a lot of that product lately, so far it never lets us down. I had considered that silver bubble wrap stuff, but the insulation factor was only R8.

The foil is entirely too thin. I can buy thicker aluminum foil at the Dollar Store. It tears too easily. Also this particular item was much too large for 40 gallon tank. Wasted a lot of insulation made fiberglass go everywhere. Once finally installed it does perform as advertised. There is improvement on water temperature.
