I got this for my 9yr old for us to go geocaching. I love the color screen. Being a novice, i would recommen reading the directions before using this device. It would clear up some confusion about the features. All in all, this meet and exceed my expectation. I would recommend this product and great price.

Best Handheld Yet

I've been buying Garmin handheld GPS units since they've been making them, and this is the best one yet! The accuracy is normally 15 feet or less, the battery life is fantastic with only 2 AAs, and the display is bright and clear. I downloaded a free USA street map off the Internet instead of paying 99 bucks to Garmin for theirs. It works great! This is a great unit and I highly recommend it

Excellent all-around GPS

This is my second Legend GPS, the other one was not a H model with the superior SurfIII chipset. The only complaint I had with my original Legend Cx was the recent find list was extensive and would take 8 seconds PER ENTERY to scroll through the list. Unless you were looking for something you had recently found so it was at the top of the list, you might as well just re-enter the data. It was on 2.4 OS and I see there up to 2.9 so maybe that would fix it, but Garmin's tech support couldn't help, they just told me to reset the list which would erase everything and start over. So what's the point of making a recent find list? I have 2 minor complaints about the new one. The clip in the back you turn to unlock the battery compartment won't stay flat against the back and keeps popping up. And when I first turn the unit on I turn the backlight on as well. The HCx will turn the backlight off as it switches from the welcome screen to the acquiring satellites screen. Then you have to turn it on again. But these are minor problems and I do highly recommend this GPS.

Acquires satellites in a heartbeat. Outstanding battery life and accuracy. Crisp colorful display and maps with excellent contrast. I bought this to replace an original Garmin eTrex Legend which I purchased back in 2003. I'm so glad I did. This unit improves on the best features of the original Legend and at a price that doesn't break the bank. We use these units mainly for Geocaching. I can highly recommend this unit.

Bought this unit to go geocaching. Am new at it and had never used a hand-held GPS before so it's a new experience all the way around. Took a while before I could figure out the darn thing. The only frustrating thing about this unit is using the "enter" button. You have to push it in just right before it works. Other than that, it's a great unit for a beginner. Once I become an "accomplished" geocacher, I'll move up to a more sophisticated unit.

Bought it for use on a dual-sport motorcycle, but decided the side controls would be difficult to use while riding, so I returned it and ordered the GPSMAP 60CSX which had the controls on the front, but when it arrived I was very disappointed with the display. It was quite dim and grainy, and faded unless it was aimed directly at you. Completely different than the Etrex display which was very bright. So I returned the 60CSX and re-ordered the Etrex and decided I would learn to live with the controls. The etrex display was so much better, even though it was smaller than the CSX. The Etrex has veyr fast acquisition; only complaints are 1) slow screen re-draw & 2) whne following a route and re-calculating it, it will send you back to the original starting point rather that calc'ing it from your present position. I think thats a software glitch that Garmin should/could correct.

Big performance from small package

Great little unit. The new receiver is very accurate for a consumer grade unit. Color screen is nice and plenty of memory with an optional miniSD card. Additional mapping data is a bit pricey but is a nice addition to the base set. Buttons are a little non-intuitive, and would like to see my waypoints/geocaches without having to go thru the "Find" function but overall very happy with the unit.

Unit has an excellent receiver and basic functionality, i.e., course, speed, max, avg values. Has good visibility in daylight. The problem comes in the very expensive map options. Core map program has little detail. I'm interested in biking and kayaking. I selected the optional Mid Atlantic Topo Map card (1:24000 scale) hoping to have better detail. Wrong. Only very major roads are shown, no bodies of water other than major rivers or the ocean. Few land features are shown. To get any water features you have to get another card/CD program for a limited area coverage. If you want/need more land/water features look for a unit that has more map options.

Legend HcX - Review

Always wanted one. Liked the price (under $200), but feel a bit mislead. Pros: Fair reception, Good color, decent battery life. Cons: No internal memory at all. My initial $200 purchase (includes tax) will soon be up to $400 because I must buy the additional maps (Road / Topo) at close to $89-$99 per cd/card. Also have to purchase a Micro SD card ($14) Basic installed maps are just that - BASIC. To do it again, I'd look at the new LOWRANCE GPS systems. Starting @ $450. But look pretty spectacular and have the latest up-to-date technology. This one is fair, but again, BASIC maps. A little bit of a learning curve as well.

Paying for the name

I purchased this gps for hunting.my old garmin emap just is too old.The unit cost me $175.00,the basic map that comes with the etrex is so basic that I couldnt find my road with it,and the town I live in was just a dot.. It only gives you Interstates and main routes. No secondary roads. No topo maps just a yellow background and a pointer.I had to pan out to about 2miles to figure out were i was.If you want secondary roads it $116.00 and if you want topo theres another $116.00 from garnins web site. I returned it and got the Delorme earthmate pn-20. It was $100.00 and it comes with Topo USA and region maps of the USA, Canada and Mexico. It also came with a 1gig memory card, a $40.00 credit on their web site and batteries. This is perfect for hunting or in the car. When it snows I will try it on my snowmobile. Any way I think garmin is making you pay for their name and then you pay for the maps.
