I absolutely love this GPS!! It recalculates quickly if I miss a turn and also has fun features like changing the command voices, and changing vehicles to either a sports car/a pair of shoes. Let's not forget the free map updates. I like that the GPS let's you know ahead of time that you'll making a right/left turn 2 miles ahead so that you get yourself ready. This is worth purchasing!
Review to this point is based on the reputation of the manufacturer, Garmin. This is my fourth Garmin GPS and each unit has met my expectations. I'm expecting the same to continue with this model. So far, the only negative I can offer - not that it's important - is that a male voice isn't installed with the internal software. Other than that, let's wait and see.
Arrived fast with the free shipping. It arrived in perfect condition. This gps is fast and ready to use almost as soon as you turn it on. This garmin is also fast at recalculating new routes. My old gps was so slow I would sometimes drive for several miles before it found the satellites. It only came with a short quick start guide so I downloaded the full manual from Garmin's website. I also downloaded and installed the garmin software on my computer to register the gps and update the maps with no problems. Getting a gps with free map updates is the only way to buy one of these units. I am very satisfied with this purchase and highly recommend it.
In the past few months my older GPS could not display maps on the screen when we got to new developments and new road intersections or exits. I purchased the 52LM because of the 5" screen. What I like about Garmin screens is the simplicity. The next best thing is the wealth of information on surrounding POIs. For example we had to meet friends at a cafe in the countryside outside a town. When we in the local area, we suddenly realized we did not actually know the full name of the cafe. We hit the 'Attractions' logo, selected dining, and it gave a list from a 0.1 mile to 5.0 mile radius. We recognized the cafe name (at least we were halfway right). On tapping on the name, it immediately recalculated and we tapped the 'GO' button and we were on our way. No sweat, no being late or lost. I am sold on this unit, since it is these simple resolution of situations is why one has a GPS in the car.
My previous Garmin was 6 years old and did not have map updates available which was one reason I purchased the 52LM. I also like being able to transfer information from Google Maps directly to my new Garmin. Software upgrades available for life was a good selling point. This is a good unit that fits my needs at a price I considered fair.
I have used Magellan for years and on our last trip from Chicago to Tulsa it had us going to Canada. Would tell you to turn around while sitting at a light, really strange stuff. Sad to get lost with a GPS. This Garmin is easy to set address and is easier to use then my last GPS's.
The GPS works pretty well, the only problem is it might take you through back routes instead of direct routes even if you have the GPS on direct route. If your on blvd/expressway it will take you in and out the the expressway and blvd until you have to change direction (if that makes sense). But, it is still very convenient especially if you don't know where you going, where your at, and etc like me almost half the time. Also, definitely listen to when it's speaking the directions to you. For instance if your on a highway and your getting off at an exit and lets say you need to stay to your left because your entering on a lets say route 1 (but your new to the area and you don't know that) you've got to really listen carefully because the GPS screen doesn't display if your staying to the left or to the right and well you might end p going in the wrong direction, I have done that plenty of times. But other than those minor details the GPS is still pretty efficient and handy.
Product is nice deal for the price. Maps are not up to date. Illinois changed the speed limit from 65 to 70 six months ago. Manards built a New store a year ago and map still shows old location which is a Hobby Lobby. Nice graphics and advance turn notification.
Not much different from the comparable TomTom model. The look of the screen was odd and I couldnt get use to it. But my biggest qualm is that this Garmin does not automatically display the street name you are on. Which is crazy. As a police officer, i need to be able to glance at the screen without hitting any additional button just to find whats my current street. And TomTom has so many much more customizable features. Returned it and got another TomTon
The definition is somewhat lacking . Difficult to read in certain light. The model I had 3 years ago had better definition. This model does not come with a holding bracket , it merely plugs directly into back of unit { not good }. You need the extra distance to set back from windshield. Battery life is still far short of usable life . Constantly has to be unsnapped from mounting and plugged into USB port for charging. At least the company is now getting wise in upgrading to lifetime map inclusion.
