If your a hunter this is one thing you need in your hunting pack! You can keep track of your buddys, mark down game, and find your way back to the camp in the dark! Radio works great! memory upgradable is awesome! I cant say enough good about this unit!!!!!! MONEY WELL SPENT
I hunt in south west NM in the Gila National Forest in some nasty thick country. "Mogollon area" I've always stuck close to logging roads and what not because I've been lost and hate the feeling. It's great knowing I don't have to worry about that anymore!!! I love the fact it has a built in radio... The battery life is great! It has everything and more than I could ever ask for! Do your research and you'll find what best for you! For the price Wal Mart.com has on this unit, you'd be crazy not to get this...
Most GPS units provide navigation guidance only. This unit not only does that, it also has a great two way radio and weather radio. It gives up to date weather based on your location. While camping last spring with friends, we had a Rino 530 with us and it gave timely weather warnings and gave the locations of 2 nearby tornadoes while they were happening. That's why I bought one. Wal-Mart's price was much better than the competition's price and Site to Store provided free shipping.
I use my Garmin 530 not only for hunting & fishing, but to check out my speedometer on my vehicle to see if it is accurate, the maps for navigation and to check to see if there is any weather coming my way. A very useful product for many different things in your everyday normal life.
This product far exceeds what I thought it would be like. make sure you get the DVD Maps, the ones that come on the micro SD's can only be viewed on the GPS device. you can now get the DVD in 24000K and it allows you to view the maps on the computer then load them to your garmin.
I love these units! I bought 2 Rino 530 HCx for My wife and me. We hunt together, but head to our own favorite spots. Now I always know where to go to meet up with her without having to ask her where she is. I can poll her unit at will to track her movement if she heads to a new location. If you ever lose something in the woods this has a trackback feature so you can follow your exact path through the woods. I also have confidence to bushwack into the brush in the morning darkness without sticking to a thumbtack trail to find my spot. I bought the Topo 24k DVDs for Northeast and Southeast. (Get the DVD version) I combined the map sets so I have Maine to Florida all on one SD Micro card. This map series has both topo lines and road detail and in the car does everything my Tom Tom does and lots more. In the woods it shows small streams and swampy areas and all the ridges and ravines. On the road it has stores, restaurants, ATM locations, etc. I was able to fit all of the northeast coastal states Maine to Maryland and the eastern half of the Carolinas and Georgia, plus all of Florida within the 4 GB file size limit. You choose the area of coverage combining DVD sets as needed then load the custom map to the SD Micro card. Buy either the 4 GB or an 8 GB SDHC Micro. File size can be only 4 GB but you can store tracks, etc. on the card. Its easy to add a waypoint at multiple treestand sites, name them whatever you like, and add a custom icon for your favorite spots. Position repeatability accuracy seems to be generally within +/- 15 feet or less. The unit is very sensitive and gives good position readings well within my house, away from windows. Amazing! The radio is very crisp and clear. We've used them all day from dark to dark and still had 50% battery life remaining. Buy the alkaline battery pack if you go multiple day camping, hiking, otherwise, no need. Buy a car charger adapter if you will be away from 110 volt outlets for several days. We stick mostly to FRS frequecies. I bought the FCC license for GMRS usage - $85.00, but only one family member needs to get the license. There are a lot of menus and sub menus to learn, but it didn't take too long to learn everything. Almost forgot! Download Google Earth to your computer and when you connect the Rino via the supplied cable you can upload your tracks and waypoints onto the Google Earth arial views and see the woods you've just explored and your exact path over hill and dale. Buy from Walmart if you want the best price. I've already shopped around.
It's a good gps with all the features you would need for hunting, hiking, geocaching and other outdoor activities. The battery life is amazing and can handle just about anything mother nature can throw at it. The cons with this model as well as the 520HCx is that it has a clip on to charge the GPS. Try finding a mount that will allow you to charge it while using it on a atv or motorcycle. Plus when using it inside a vehicle it will lose signal. It would be nice for the money you pay to have the option to add an external GPS.
I bought the GPS for use in hiking, and hunting. I hunt with other people and chose to get a system so that we can keep in contact with each other. With ths unit I can talk with them when needed and have a visual mark on the unit so that I know where they are in relation to me, so that there are no accidents while we hunt.
I normally rate Garmin gps units rather high but at this time I cannot rate the Rino 530HCx very high. There are two clearcut reasons it gets a low rating from me. I have tried to load 4 different 2GB micro SD cards with approximately 1700 to 1900 Map Source US Topo maps. I have loaded the cards using the card reader on my computer and two 530HCx gps units will not recognize them. I have also tried loading the cards directly from the computer to the two 530HCx and the units will not recognize the maps that have been loaded to the card. I am not close to the limit (2025 maps) Garmin says the units will recognize. My next check was to install the cards in my Garmin 76Cx and the full number of maps displayed. Another check was to load Map Source on my computer desktop to download the maps back to the desktop from the cards. All the maps are present. When I limit my map download to the card using the Mini USB to USB cable to a small portion of Oregon, NV, and the full State of California the 530HCx successfully displays the maps. My second gripe with the unit is how the Micro SD is retained in the unit. Most likely it is was designed for a very limited number of cycles. With my efforts exceeding the design it failed. The retainer is a small tray cover that swings up and the contacts on the Micro SD card are placed in position to touch the contacts in the unit. The tray cover then slides to the rear of the unit, locking the card in place. My wife had purchased me two additional Micro SD cards to try because the first three cards I had tried were of the same brand. The thinking was that the problem was the card, and not the unit. The tray cover is located under the battery. When I removed the battery which is on top of the tray cover to try a new card the tray cover fell out on the carpet. Fortunately for me my wife has a lighted magnifying glass that she uses for her hobbies and fixing my toys. She was able to get it reassembled. As a colored gps unit, it is great and gives me accuracy under cover down to 7-feet. I will need to conduct more field tests to see how it truly measures up, but from the gps side it is the best so far, and it is the only reason I give it 4-stars. I have been too busy to give the radio side of the unit a true workout, and that will come with time. It receives weather radio loud and clear, and I been able to monitor some other traffic. At this point, if I was to head for the Rockies, I would have to load another card with maps rather then use my current 2GB card, which has only 4% of its space in use. Should the radio side of this unit function as advertised, the overall rating might go up to a three out of five stars. But the failure to draw maps stored on the card issue will keep the overall rating down and I have not addressed the down grade caused by the flimsy tray cover. I returned the original 530HCx I purchased from Wal Mart after receiving approval from Garmin Support. In a timely manner Garmin sent me a new replacement unit. Unfortunately it will not recognize more than four percent of the card capacity.
Great GPS when the compass works. Ordered first one from Walmart.com and compass was malfunctioning, frequent calibrations and reinstalling mapping software didn't fix the issue. Returned it to local store and helpful staff ordered another one. Compass works great on the second Garmin I ordered. Only calibrated it one time and never any issues. Recommend the topo 24k software from Garmin as well. Great radio reception and seeing my hunting partners' locations is a huge plus to this GPS.
