Adds much to the fun. Had no trouble transfering my area of interest to my Garmin etrex Venture HC from computer (Venture HC can not hold full topo but nobody can cover that much area at a time anyway). I am glad I puchased this. No complaints. Just don't fool yourself, a handheld GPS has a small screen.
I got this and City Navigator 2009 and by far this product rules. I use this for hiking/biking/exploring and it's to the T. I would highly recommend.
The description for this product isn't quite right; it does not come with a preloaded micro-sd card (it's possible that the warehouse shipped me the standard topo disk instead of the software/micro-sd combo). The topo software is most excellent, and very easy to install and use. I easily downloaded local area maps to my Rino 530hcx, and was very impressed with the detailed resolution. Overall, this product is a very good value.
There are more precise topo maps on line. I was disapointed in the accuracy of this product. It is sufficent to find points but missing many landmarks.
I have a computer with 3 disk drives. My primary drive is the F: drive. The installer for version 5.0 has had an important feature removed. It no longer prompts for the installation location. The installer creates: c:\garmin c:\mapsource c:\webupdater <system drive>:\Program Files\Garmin\USB Drivers If you only have one drive, this is almost a good solution. Since the days of Windows 95, programs are installed in the folder named "Program Files" on your system drive. If you want to properly manage your system, you won't like the installation locations. If not, you probably won't notice that Garmin spattered the software all over your hard drive. Once the software was installed, it worked as advertised and was very functional. You need this product in order to make your GPS useful.
