The Murphy Lab Ultra Light Aged finish treatment, paired with lightly aged hardware, simulates decades of light play wear, giving it the unique character, vibe, and feel of an original example from the Gibson Golden Era. Ultra Light Aging utilizes only the lightest touches by the Murphy Lab aging technicians and creates unique lacquer checking with minimal playing wear - as if the guitar spent most of its life in its case. Ultra Light Aging is paired with VOS patina hardware. The Nitrocellulose Lacquer used in the 1950s and 1960s was imperfect and brittle, causing the finish to develop checks typically under the finish. In partnership with Tom, Gibson Custom has scientifically reverse-engineered that original 1950s-1960s Gibson lacquer. Tom combined his aging skills and this new lacquer to create improved, ultra-realistic aging patterns. Tom led an initiative at the Gibson Custom Shop to test prototypes of all different shapes and finishes and levels of aging and each one was, in Tom’s words, "game changing."
