This is a good value product in my opinion. Several less expensive boxes open in front for viewing and cleaning. This one opens on the side. If momma bird is nesting when you open to view, it will fly out; you don't want to be in front. I mount on a metal pipe with a U bolt so the extension of the back at the top is also important to me.
Reasonable price; we'll constructed; arrived on time.
The smell of cedar was nice--I hope the bluebirds will like it.
Nice birdhouse for my use(geocache gadget) A lot heavier made than most you see on the shelf, this is real wood not balsa or pressed wood. It has a 1/2 inch gap at top sides and 2 small holes in the bottom for ventilation. The side door does open up, but you need Phillip's screwdriver to open.
I have the smaller model whose nesting space is 3 1/2" by 4", this one is 3 1/2 by 4 3/4". With the smaller house, for the last three years, tree swallow offspring has been limited to two, with the remains of the third left behind. I am hoping the larger cavity will permit another fledgling. Time will tell.
The sides need to have 1/4 inch gap on top for ventilation for bird health and being able to open the side of the box for cleaning etc. Also a predator trap over the hole would have been really nice. Well made for the most part, would of prefer nails or screws over staples for construction but it seem to be ok.
Disliked that stickers were stapled to front and had to remove them and leave marks in the wood. SUGGEST: Tape stickers on top of bird house so no damage will be seen when removed.
This is not the best made house. The house is assembled with staples. It requires that you unscrew a screw to lift the door (other ones I have purchased just have a toggle that you rotate- very easy to check and clean). Also, there is only one attachment point - on the top. Other houses have an attachment point at the top and bottom to prevent rotation. The house does not have any wood on the bottom so I can't attache through to a post unless I go inside house.. Disappointed in the quality especially for this price - recommend searching local craft shows instead.
