The HP Envy 17 has all the right features to learn Windows 8.1 including touch screen, 750 GB hard drive, optical DVD drive, SD memory card reader, (4) USB ports, back-lighted keyboard and fingerprint reader. Laptop is good-looking, well constructed, fast and keyboard has a nice feel. HP to their credit doesn't factory load a lot of free "nuisance" software which takes time to delete from your PC. I'm very pleased with the purchase.
not crazy about windows8.1 but after I played with my new laptop it's awesome. The backlit keys are so helpful. This laptop has everything most people will ever need.
Perfect for my needs. Streams video without buffering. Easy setup. Love the finger swipe log in .TouchSmart pad easier to utilize.
This laptop has all the features I was looking for at a reasonable price. This is my first laptop and is an upgrade from a desktop running XP. The only thing I do not like about this computer is the system Windows 8.1. It requires a large learning curve. Some features with the system are much faster while other feature that were formally simple are now difficult or unknown. The only other issue is battery life, although I have not actually timed it , seems to be only a couple hours or so. Overall I am very pleased with with the machine and like I mentioned, it may just be I,m new to this format.
I am writing this review from my new HP laptop and it is not burning up my leg like the last one I had. It runs much cooler. I read that the Intel Core was much cooler and they were correct. My last HP was much less expensive but there was a reason. I'm trying to figure out Windows 8 which came pre-loaded so there is a big learning curve for me right now. That will take time. This laptop also works as a tablet so you touch icons and swipe the screen which is also a learning process for me. Overall I am very satisfied with this laptop. I did purchase the extended warranty through Sam's too just in case. Oh just one more thing ....it's pretty and matches our Airstream trailer where it will be used for our entertainment and information along the road :-)
I have absolutely no problem with the computer itself. The only problem I have is Window 8. What a pain. If you want a good computer this one is great. But, downgrade to a previous version of Windows. Windows 7 recommended.
This is a great laptop for the money, great technology for the price. The only issue is getting used to windows 8. We have never used win8 before and there is quite a learning curve, takes a bit to find out where programs are located. This came shipped with windows 8.0 and we upgraded to windows 8.1 with no issues. There is one software bug from HP that keeps popping up a notice that you need to upgrade your power supply, this is just a bug, no need to purchase a new power supply.
This is my third HP computer and second with "Simple Pass", but this new purchase has it's issues. I spent a better part of a weekend trying to activate the finger swipe, to include an hour and a half phone call with tech support which led to 30+ downloads, 2 hours, to make it happen. There was a repeat tech call, due to the fact that the new version of "Simple Pass" does not recognize some addresses that my Pavilion dv7's version does. I have to give HP tech support a vote of confidence, but the jury is still out on this unit. Despite all, I still am a fan of HP products.
I bought this computer for my daughter who was going to be leaving for college. This computer sits on her desk in her dorm. A few days after the 1 year warranty was expired she started having hinge issues. It's so bad that the hinge is pushing the back of the computer off and the cooling fan is not working. Upon reading many other hinge stories online I will never be buying another HP product again.
When I tried to type, the cursor moved around randomly. This may be due to some problem with the touch screen. As we tried to figure this out, the operating system crashed. We sent it back and will see if the replacement works. I may just return it totally since I am concerned about having a lemon computer.
