I really did my homework before making this purchase, and it really paid off. This is an excellent pc at an excellent price. If your on the fence get it, you won't be disappointed. Fast, and enough room for any programs you could possibly want.
This is the best and the cheapest PC I have purchased so far, and of course it is mainly due to the technological advances in this field. I have started buying PC since 25 years ago, about one every 2 or 3 years, and every single time the new one is better and cheaper than the previous one, and this one is no exception! This one is the best, fastest, and the cheapest one. The only reason I entitled the review as "An almost perfect product" vs "A perfect product" is that it does not come with at least a Window Recovery DVD---it practically comes with NOTHING other than the PC and the AC adapter. There is no manual, no recovery CDs or DVDs. Indeed after I installed a few programs into the PC, there is a message coming up on reboot that something (the configuration?) has changed please insert the Windows Recovery DVD and repair the system, etc. But when I looked all over the content of the box in which the PC came there was absolutely no Windows Recovery CD or DVD or anything of that kind!!!
This notebook is fast! It has a lot of space and a pretty decent (though limited) graphics card. I had kind of expected the 1.3mp webcam from the dv7 to be the same as the one on this model but it wasn't and that's the only "expectation" it didn't meet (webcams aren't that expensive or even necessary and the one it comes with is fine for most users, it's the same integrated webcam you'd get on a mac) Windows 7 is a dream come true and I can totally get used to plugging thing in and having windows find the drivers automatically for me. For example, the webcam on this is 640 x 480 like a lot of other computers, it's good enough for most users but I have a 2mp logitec orbit that I wanted to use with it. All I had to do was plug it into the usb slot and windows did the rest. Installed the drivers and software from the internet in seconds without me having to press one key. Likewise for my Wacom Tablet, Usb soundcard and everything else I've tried plugging into it so far. That alone impressed me enough to come back and write a review. Mine doesn't seem to make any noise. I can barely hear the fan at all and it doesn't seem to have any unusual heat issues. I build websites, make videos and DJ from this laptop and it has given me no problems doing any of that. It also seems to be able to at least play most games (though reduced settings are necessary on newer, more needy games) I usually don't use norton a\v since I had some bad experiences with it being too bulky and slowing down systems in the past but the new one that comes on this PC has impressed me, it actually tells you AS SOON as you visit a site that has spyware or viruses on it and gives you a list of the infected files, the name of the virus or malware and exactly where on the site it found them! To me that's one excellent feature that can save lots of time and money! With the 4gigs of ram it never seems like anything is running in the background. The computer is as fast with 10 windows open as it is with 1. Overall I am very satisfied with the product for the price. Sure, a Core i7 with 12 gigs of ram and a 2gig dedicated graphics card would blow it away in playing the latest games but you'd be paying $1500 more at least just for the added ability to play games... If you like games that much I'd suggest buying a ps3, if you like computers and want something fast and friendly this is an excellent choice!
I've had this laptop for several weeks now, and it has performed exactly as expected. It boasts a pretty powerful CPU, plenty of ram, and the video card it comes with runs fast enough to play Modern Warfare 2 at medium to high settings. To the complaint about the DVD player making sounds.. Mine works fine, I've ripped several DVD's, burned CD's and DVD's, and even used the lightscribe feature. Windows 7 is great, it works smoothly and comes with a lot of small but useful features, such as including a zip program. The webcam works well, although the integrated mic's could be a little better, the included remote control works well, although I'm never really far enough away for it to be useful. I'm also happy with the altec-lansing speakers, they sounds great for being on a laptop and get much louder than those on previous laptops. The extra ports, such as the HDMI and eSATA port have proved useful. The battery life seems about average to me, a few hours of surfing the web, a little less with music playing. But good enough to take notes in two or three classes before its recharge time. Overall I'm very satisfied with this laptop, with how it works, and with what it comes with. I use my laptop for a lot of things that require it to work harder than average, things like big games, encoding video, and transferring large files, and it has done all that I needed. The fan does run, but unless you are really running the machine hard it's quiet and efficient.
I have purchased the best laptop, I am very happy, I am really enjoying my new laptop. And besides it was the lowest price found. thank you very much Wallmart!!
I spent a few months researching computers because my desktop is Dell and I've been very happy with it for 6 years. I wanted the best for the least dollars so even though my laptop was to be my Christmas present, I wasn't going to rush just to get it here. I saw this ad on Wal-Mart about the HP (which is the brand my husband prefers) and realized that this was just what I had been looking for. The on-line check out, the shipping, and the pickup was so easy.......it was amazing. I will definitely choose to order this way again. I am still learning all the goodies my HP has, and I am so happy with it.
I have had the Laptop for about two weeks and it's great! I looked at the reviews before buying it which made me test everything to ensure it was problem free. This is my first time review, but this laptop is worth backing. I love that the battery charger is very small and the weight of both together can be carried with ease. If your in the market for a nice laptop, I give this one my vote. A side note Wal-Mart is great, if don't like it you can return it within 15 days for full refund, no restocking fee either!
I don't often write reviews, but this notebook impressed me so much I really felt the need to. The performance greatly exceeds that of a new Mac Powerbook that I borrowed last week to edit RAW photos. I am a professional photographer, and I work with very large files. A 500 GB drive with 7200 RPM! A photographer's dream machine. Even the beautiful display needed very little adjustment out of the box to get it calibrated for photos. I also have a dv2 12.1" Expresso, but with a single core processor, and I needed something small, and of desktop power to edit photos and videos. I have not been disappointed, this machine is quick. It runs AutoCAD Inventor with no problem, as well as DxO optics pro very quickly, and that RAW photo conversion program is one of the biggest resource hogs out there. Also, I just got Photoshop CS3 installed about an hour ago, and I'm running that, DxO, Outlook, Word, and Firefox with no problems. Try that on any other $750 notebook. I think I like Windows 7 better than Mac OSX as well. Another reviewer noted that the fan always runs. Of course it does; there's a lot of processing power to cool down in this little box. Still, it's not a loud fan. The same is true of the little dv2. I guess it's possible he may have gotten a lemon, but mine performs flawlessly. Overall, I have given it a rating of slightly less than 5 stars for only one reason: another USB port or two would have been really useful.
I bought this product for pennies on the dollar at Wal-Mart about a week and a half ago. This has been a terrific product until today. It crashed!!! My screen is blank and I am sure it was the motherboard because one of my friends had one similar to mine and another friend had a Compaq (but I am pretty sure they merged, HP & Compaq that is) and the same thing happened to theirs. Their computers were out of warranty so it ended up being cheaper for them to buy another computer. But I called HP tonight and they were EXTREMELY helpful, we went through a list of things to do to try and gets it back working. We were unsuccessful in doing so, so they are shipping me a box and they will repair it free of charge. When I bought this computer I was a little skeptical because of the very low price but it was a hard deal to pass up. When it crashed I was convinced I would never buy from HP again but the tech support person was very helpful and took his time with me (I had to take the computer apart). So all in all. This computer is a great product and HP's help and support is fantastic, so I would recommend this product although it did crash. Windows 7 is a nice little touch too.
All in all, I would like to say Wal-mart was very helpful with the computer and service plans and they did a fantastic job. Not impressed with the laptop though. Had the machine for a week, performance has been pretty sluggish. Tonight, I put a DVD in and something made a loud screech and grinding noise. There have also been beeps, clicks, and the fan runs constantly. I figure for the price I paid I should have gotten a better product. This one is definitely going back, I might try Hp again, not quite sure yet.
