At at recommendation of Dr. Greene.com I decided to purchase this monitor to avoid those late night urgent care visits that turned out to be nothing. I ordered the product and recieved it the next day. Coincidently I had an ear infection that I had been stuggling with for over a week. The day I recieved it, I had seen my doctor and my infection was in full bloom. The other ear was clear. This gave me the PERFECT situation to test the effictiveness of the monitor. I did the pre-use calibration and put it right to use. I first read my 'good' ear and it was right on the money (level 1). Next I tested my infected ear and it was right again (level 4). I tested my kids ears (ages 1 &3 and perfectly healthy) and both came back accurate and consistent (1). I then tested my husband, who was fighting a cold and it said to 'monitor' (2) one ear which is totally accurate and believeable. I then retested all of us and got exactly the same results multiple times. I then tested to see if I didn't lift the ear right or insert all the way if the results varied and they didn't much... my infected ear ranged from 3-5 which is all under the category of 'consult doctor'. I think this is a great product!
My 17 month old daughter was very irritable for a few days and had a bad cold. I wasn't sure if it was the cold or maybe teething. Even though this had mixed reviews, I decided to buy it and check it out. It was a little difficult at first to use since you have to pull the ear in a certain way to straighten the natural curve of the ear in order to get a correct reading. But after I figured it out, the reading kept saying "Contact Doctor" for her right ear and "Fluid Unlikely" in her left ear. I tried several times and got the same reading. Took her to the Dr the next day and sure enough.. ear infection in her right ear!! I would highly recommend this product with the caution that you just have to learn how to use it first.. takes a couple of tries but once you figure it out.. it really works!!!
I am surprised by the reviews that say this is easy to use. Unless it has been improved since I bought it 3 yrs ago, I find it hard to ever get a real reading, I would say 99% of the time I get the error message. You have to put this in the child's ear just right and then slowly turn it, if you don't do it right you get the error beep. I think it is accurate when I can actually get a reading, but I don't recommend it until they make it simpler to use.
We paid about $60.00 for the Ear Check Monitor. After having it about 2 months all it would read is error. We contacted the company to try and get it replaced, but no luck. Would not recommend this product.
Bought this item because both my boys gets lots of ear infections so I thought I would be able to tell whether I am wasting a trip to the doctor or not. Bought it since I thought my youngest (18 months) had one. Got it home and after I finally got it positioned into his ear right (that took 10 minutes, it gives you an error message until it's positioned correctly) it said no infection. Took him to the dr the following day and he had a SEVERE infection in not one but BOTH ears. So glad I didn't listen to this waste of plastic!!! I will stick with my mothers intuition. I normally know when they have infections and obviously my intuition is more accurate than this thing. Returned this product for a full refund as defective.
My husband got this because my 16 month old had and ear infection and he wanted to know sooner next time she got one. He paid about $50 for it and we used it the check battery light came on we changed the battery's and now it will only say error and won't check your ears. Basically when it did work it sent sound into your ear then when it was done beeping you could look at the back and see if it said monitor, go to a doc or no fluid.. The idea of the item is fabulous however the item itself didn't hold up. I am calling the manufacturer because you can't return these things
This is the worst product I have ever purchased. I used it on all three of my children and we got a different reading each time. Then my Oldest came home sick-the machine said everything was fine. A trip to the doctor said she had high levels of fluid and a very bad ear infection. Unfortunately I through the package away or I would return it. Now it is in my sons doctor kit.
my one year old had so many ear infections that i couldnt tell anymore when he had one, i thought this would help. it does not work!!!
My son has terrible ear infections so we bought this. We paid about $50 for it. I had originally seen it in a magazine. Anyway, we tried it out on my husband first...it said he had an infection. We tried it on my older daughter...same thing. We also tried it on myself. Guess what??? Same reading...ear infection. Later, we tried it on my son and it said his ears were normal. He was running temp so I took him to the doctor. He had two major ear infections that we are still battling to this day. In my opionion, this product is a waste of money. I don't believe that it is even accurate. The best thing to do is take your child to the doctor if you suspect an ear infection. The concept of the is contraption is genious but it doesn't work.
I purchased this earcheck because of my son's frequent ear infections. We used it four times and then the check battery light came on. I replaced the batteries, and then the error light came on and the device no longer worked. I have contacted the manufacturer. Apparently, from the other review here, this is a manufacturing defect.
