When I bought the house I asked the previous owner to please replace the garbage disposal because it was making a lot of noise and vibrations. The previous owner reported to me that the plumber said that the stainless steel sink was too thin and that is why it vibrated so much. I finally got tired of dealing with this Whisperator and ordered an Insinkerator brand from Amazon and installed it myself. Today I am so pleased with the decision I made because the disposal was really easy to install and it's smooth & quiet.
Installing was easy, except for the part that my old dispenser's wiring was not compatible with the new. All in all a fun and easy DIY experience. The Badger 5XP has been working great so far. It seems stronger and more quiet than my last/old waste disposal. It is heavy like most disposals, and a little bigger than my old (but that was expected). I hope this lasts my house a long time!
I have replace old disposers with the Badger using both 1/2 and 3/4 depending on who is renting the homes, larger families use the unit more. I've forunf them to be VERY DEPENDABLE and without problem during the 23 years plus. It's nice to know you can still depend on a quality product. I would highly recommend these peobucts
The garbage disposal is working fine. Our previous disposal was a InSinkErator and it gave us no problems.
I am still evaluating this product, The original Disposal 1/2 hp wasn't an insinkerator it was a home builder device. It finally died after 11 years, and a plumber came and installed a new insinkerator 3/4 hp and said it was a better disposal unit with more horsepower. it only lasted 41/2 years ?. When my new insinkerator was delivered the installer I called took it out of the box and inspected it and showed me where there was a dent in the housing as if it it was dropped. I took a picture of it. After installation it seemed to work so he advised that I should keep it rather then send it back. So I am still evaluating the device. I am not sure what to think at this point. Thank You
Although noisy, I would recommend it to anyone needing a reliable, affordable garbage disposal unit. On the box it says it's easy to install -- and as a 74 1/2 year old woman I can attest to the fact that it was it was -- as a replacement for an old, worn out InSinkErator.
This is the second one we've purchased in the past 4 years. It works fine disposing of food. The rubber guard, though, seems to have a larger opening and/or is made of softer material. In the first week of using it, my favorite measuring spoons fell in and were "eaten" by the disposal. The rubber guard doesn't come out for replacemnt or cleaning.
I would have purchased a Power 900 model but that model is larger in diameter and the sink shut off valve is right behind it and I was afraid it would be too close so I bought the 5XP which is the same diameter as the one I replaced so I knew it would be fine. A little tricky to install but only because the power wire (hard wired) has no slack so a little hard to lift unit up and twist.
A few weeks ago my wife told me "THERE'S A LEAK UNDER THE SINK", so I investigated and discovered that there was indeed a leak under the sink, and the leak was the garbage disposal. Further investigation revealed the garbage disposal was in "insinkerator". I checked and the model was available at the local home supply store, but for about $25 less at Amazon, so I ordered one. Amazon got me the unit in a timely manner. Installation was straightforward and took perhaps an hour. Installation WAS easier than anticipated because I was replacing the same make and model. After the new unit was installed and it worked, I disassembled the old unit to determine the cause of failure. The cause of failure was simply "planned obsolescence" , as the old unit, less than 5 years old, had simply rusted out. Older units would typically last 15-20 years, but they were constructed far better. I'm disappointed, but not surprised, that a formerly respected manufacturer is now selling inferior products simply to increase sales.
This unit replaced the same type which I had installed less than three years ago. I do not think the only two people living here abused or overused it. The impeller/grinder is badly rusted and pitted. The unit began leaking so I had to replace it. Next time I will try to find a different manufacturer, unless you build something more reliable.
