[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] The Irobot Coding Robot, has been a great experience for my family. My kids enjoyed playing with the systems and getting the robot to work with the plan they laid out. For starters the robot comes in a secure and well packaged box and is very easy to remove. There is no building of the robot or putting it together, there is a few stickers to put on if you so wish to do. The app that you have to download is pretty straight forward and a few minutes of hands on use and the robot is up and going. I do with the app had more of a learning curve associated with it, like demo programs and how to set them up all the way up to advanced usage. My kids and I (11yr old , 10yr old and 8 yr old) all took turns programing the robot to do various things. From just going in a straight line to some advanced movements like programming it to go around furniture it was fun. There is even an option to put a market inside the robot and have it draw a pre planned out picture, that was somewhat hard to program at first and then easier once we found more information searching on the internet. The robot come with a feature that allows it to magnetically attach to a white board and can move around the board and write with the marker. We were not able to test this feature and I feel like this would be a classroom feature more or less. My kids used the robot for a total of about 2 hours between them all and after coding it to do some simple things and having the robot move around and interact with our pets, they have since stopped using it. There is some re-usablility but its definitely something that my family has not been interested in revisiting. I could see this being a huge hit in a classroom setting and students interacting with it and having it programmed to different tasks on the white board, but in the home setting I do not see it having a lot of re visiting power. It might be something on a rainy day the kids breakout again and play with but other than that its been in the box. Overall I was impressed with the product it is extremely durable, well built, has a lot of options. The programming was much easier to understand after searching the internet for ideas. My 10yr old has done programming in school was also able to figure it out after using it for a bit. I would recommend for a school type setting but not sure for in home.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] We recently tried out the irobot Root coding robot toy. My son is 10 and he was so excited! The Root comes with a charger and needed to be charged initially. We went to the website on his Chromebook and were able to connect/pair the Root to the computer. Once this was done he spent several hours playing with this toy! You use a series of images/icons to determine what you want your Root to do. You simply plug in the codes and the Root will act it out. The Root comes with a large play mat that folds up. It also comes with a dry erase marker. The codes command it to do a variety of things-turns, lights, drop the marker -where it will draw a line wherever it goes (on the dry erase board it comes with!!!) This was probably my sons favorite part. The Root will make lines and you can make designs with it (I included some pictures of what he did). This is a super fun toy. Easy for beginners, and also contains higher levels for more challenges. While we have stuck with the beginner level, the next levels are more realistic to coding and are a great tool for kids to learn with. It is basic coding to help kids get the idea of how coding works and they can see it come to life immediately! I am really impressed. We have not had any issues with this product. I recommend this irobot.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I had never used a coding product like this before, so I didn't know exactly what to expect. I have a teenager who is interested in coding, so I was excited to use it with him. We were both very impressed with the product. It is easy to use, and fun to play with. We would recommend it to anyone!
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] My kids were so excited when Root arrived! Within minutes, they had him out of the box, had downloaded the app, and were coding different things for the little robot to do. They absolutely love that he can write on a whiteboard. My 10 year old immediately coded him to write her name, and my 12 year old made him draw a star. I think it's pretty cute that his eyes move and indicate the direction that he's about to move. There is so much that we can do with this little guy, and we are still learning more about him! We may have to get another one for even more fun. :)
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] My son loves the IRobot coding robot. He immediately got the hang of it and was programming the IRobot to make shapes, numbers and sounds on Level 1. He's now unto Level 2. I would how the IRobot has 3 levels and gradually gets more advanced. I would highly recommend this product to anyone who have children 6+ years old that are into technology and love to learn. This IRobot will keep them busy and having fun.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I loved it, my 5 year old son and my 13 year old daughter are enjoying it very much. They drew, played, listened to music and really enjoyed their i-robot Coding.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] A lot of fun to use for my son and I. He loved learning how to code the machine to draw, having the precoded options. The white board size was perfect.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] All three of my boys, ages 10, 15, and 18, found the Root iRobot fun. They opened it, charged the battery, and immediately started coding it to play songs and draw pictures. They were excited and really entertained right up until the battery died. But they haven't charged it since. I probably wouldn't buy it for my kids just because they seemed to lose interest so quickly, but I think I'll encourage them to get it back out and see if they still show as much interest.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This review is for the Root rt0 iRobot, not a vacuum. Overall this is a good coding product for kids that are beginning to code. The coding starts out basic and can get very complex. One of the reasons why this is recommended for beginner coders is that you can actually see what you've coded as it's drawn out on the whiteboard in front of you. I would definitely recommend this product for kids who want to learn to code.
It is a well designed piece of hardware, let down by software and marketing. 1. The claim that level 3 offers "fulltext programming in swift" (paraphrased) is repeated many times, including on this site, but is false. Root can be programmed via drag and drop icons only. some of those icons LOOK like text for swift code, but are just icons. (some customization is available, such as direction or speed). As a concrete example of what you cannot do is create a subroutine that takes arguments. Some behaviors can be simulated by loops and variables, but doing this via drag and drop must be the single worst programming experience I've had. You cannot type. All is drag and drop I lied: you can type comments. That part of programming has been kept. 2. The drag and drop for the iOS app is finicky. It has opinions of where a tile may go, and it's often the wrong opinion. Imagine trying to excite a youngster to program when the app fights against them. 3. low level info is non-existent. Try to find answers to: - what is the resolution of the encoders in the wheels? - do programs run on the app or are they uploaded to the root? - what are the light sensors? (they aren't color sensors, we know). (the answers are: unknowable, but low. about a degree. on the app. This robot is completely remote controlled. I still don't know that either). It is a shame, because the false claim lessens an otherwise compelling product, and the lack of clear information makes it hard to judge it without purchase. however, it may still be the most attractive product available for youngsters.
