I am replacing all the doors with 6 Panel. The tool works great but i only get about 4 doors before the hole saws and router bits go dull. On the first doors i used a dremel tool and the heat melted the plastic lockset plate . I bought a complete new kit for the second set of doors and tried an electric drill instead of the dremel tool. The speed was too slow and the router bit also over heated and melted the plastic. My next kit will be the metal door kit to see if the hole saws hold up better. It also has the plastic jig for the lockset plate The cheap doors from the Big box store have very little real wood and the sawdust and resin core eat up the bits and hole saws. I'll buy it again but i would pay extra for a better template
I had to replace an old spindle type door knob with a new lockset. Because there was a hole in the center there was nothing for a center bit to grip to and cut through. The guide clamped on to the door giving a stable base to cut through. I was very pleased with the outcome.
I need a replacement bolt plate template, as the screw hole pins have broken off. Suggestion - based on using it with the router bit, maybe something stronger than plastic would be more suitable for this template.
This tool has been great. My only complaint, like some of the other reviews, is that the bolt plate template is plastic and has melted and no longer has it's original shape after about the 5th door. This had made it difficult to get a clean cut on the other doors. I would suggest making this part out of metal and charging a couple of bucks more. I have been replacing all the interior doors in my home with 6 panel solid wood doors. So far I have done 8 doors with 4 more to go.
I bought this to install a deadbolt lock on a solid wood door. The door jig worked like it should and the bits & hole saws seemed to work fine but I also didn't try to cut the entire hole in one pass either. I only did the one door so I can't speak to how long they stay sharp but it was fine for me. On the down side, there's no easy way or jig to align the strike plate on the door jam itself. It took me twice as long to install and adjust, through several tries, than it did to cut and install the lock itself.
The kit fails to meet advertised attributes. Deficiencies include: 1) Only one mandrel that would not connect to the 1" hole saw; 2) there is no template for the door jamb striker; 3) the instructions refer to a step 5 but there is no step 5; and 4) the template was ruined when routing the plate was attempted.
After one door, the large hole saw jammed onto the spindle and I had to return it to the hardware store to remove it. Now I'm home and ready to cut the boot holes but the size of the thread on the spindle and the size of the thread on the small hole saw are completely different! Not impressed from a usually reliable company like Irwin.
You will need a vice to change from on bore saw to another. So add that to your tool assemblage. Sorry I purchased this kit. Ladies do NOT purchase this for home improvement - made for gorilla muscles, no finesse.
The hole saws in this kit kept coming apart from the bit used interchangeably. It was practically impossible to finish the job, and I caused extensive damage to the door in the process. I could have bought two hole saws and used the template that came with the lock with much less effort and time that I spent with this kit. It was a waste of time and money.
Very disappointming that the design and engineering team did not consider the door jamb as a very important component of a door. So why leave out the strike plate template out? I also agree with the other reviews about the latch plated template being made cheaply.
