Detailed product description

Name: Tateurndina ocellicauda, also known as the Peacock Gudgeon or Goby. Though in the order Gobiiformes, which includes true “gobies” (Gobiidae), peacock gudgeons actually belong to the family Eleotridae (gudgeons/sleeper gobies). A couple main distinctions between true gobies and gudgeons is that gudgeons have a less benthic lifestyle and also lack the fused pelvic fins that true gobies use to “suction” themselves to rocks and other surfaces. Peacock gudgeons are currently the only species in the genus Tateurndina. The species name “ocellicauda” refers to the spot at the base of the caudal fin that is reminiscent of peacock feathers (hence the common name). Recommended Enclosure Size: For one pair of gudgeons, we recommend a 10 gallon aquarium. To keep groups or multiple pairs, 15-20 gallons is the minimum. Although groups of 6 or more can be kept together, it is recommended to monitor them as they may need to be separated due to excessive fin nipping/bullying. Temperature: Peacock gudgeons are tropical and prefer temps in the mid to high 70’s. The ideal range is 72-80 degrees fahrenheit. pH/Hardness: Peacock gudgeons do best in moderate hardness and a pH of 6.5-7.5. They can be acclimated to slightly higher pH (7.6-7.9), but over 8.0 should be avoided. They tend to prefer slightly acidic conditions and appreciate driftwood/leaf litter. Size: At the time of sale, you will be getting a juvenile animal which is 05.-0.75.” Full grown, peacock gudgeons can get up to 3.” Age: At the time of purchase, this animal will be at least 3 months old. Peacock gudgeons can live for 4-5 years with proper care. Feeding: Peacock gudgeons are primarily carnivorous. While they can accept dried foods such as flakes and small pellets, they tend to really thrive on live and frozen fare. Just make sure whatever you are feeding is small enough to fit in their mouth. Daphnia, brine shrimp, and white worms make excellent treats. Color/Pattern: Peacock gudgeons are overall a very colorful fish with a distinctly purple color with reddish bands and bright yellow on their fins. They also display a dark “eyespot” on the caudal fin/caudal peduncle. Social Behavior: Although loosely described as a “shoaling” fish, Peacock gudgeons really do not like their own kind. In aquariums, they tend to be nippy towards conspecifics and territorial towards rival males (usually the males are the biggest troublemakers). They do, however, get along swimmingly with other species of peaceful community fish such as tetras, rasboras, and danios. They can even intermingle with some dwarf cichlids. Keeping multiple specimens in smaller aquaria takes vigilance, as you may have to separate them if aggression becomes too high. Pairs can be introduced together for spawning purposes and can get along for quite a while so long as the male is not too aggressive with his courtship.
