Jukebox Gospel

David Shoaf is a very important part of His Light. He is the band and the singers. He created the Jukebox Gospel sound, arranged the music and is 99% of what you hear. David chose to release this album under the name, His Light, instead of his own name. The name His Light is a phrase that David owns. He says, quot; It's not about me, it's about Jesus and as children of God, we are all His Light.quot; David was born at a very early age in Salisbury North Carolina early one Christmas morning in 1956. Starting at birth, David seemed to do things a little differently than everyone else. He was born on Christmas Day and he was supposed to be a girl. He didn't have a name for three days. No boy's names had been chosen. This could be the reason that his hymns sound a little different. Or it could be because he listened to bands like the Beatles, Iron Butterfly and Grand Funk Railroad before he became a Christian. When David was a little boy growing up in Salisbury, music became his passion, listening to it whenever he could. Hiding in it at times, if his world became troubled. When he was still very young, something happened that would change his life forever. A friend showed him how to play a few chords on a guitar. He realized that he could play most of the music he was hearing. His dad took David to a few group guitar lessens and told him if he could learn how to play the song called, Wildwood Flower, he would buy him an electric guitar. A few days later, David played the song for his dad. His dad bought him his first electric guitar. The next big thing that happened was a little while later when David went to visit another friend. This friend showed David a new full size trap set drum set his parents had just bought for him. (He was an only child and he always got whatever he wanted.) The friend banged on the set. Then he let David have a turn. Although he had never played the drums before, David did great playing them. He played a drum solo he had listened to in his collection of music tapes and records. The neighbor became mad, told David to quit playing his drums and to go home. David then practiced playing the drums on a collection of different size boxes until his dad came through once again and bought him some real drums. Then came the bands. Acid rock bands. Then yet another major event would happen in David's life. He arranged for his band to perform in a talent show at his school, West Rowan High School. The band changed their minds and decided not to be in it. This made David angry. He went without the band, alone with his drums. There were around nine hundred people there in the audience, including his parents when David walked on stage, played a five minute drum solo and then received the shock of his life. He received a strong ovation, complete with hand claps, cheers and yells ! David said, quot; I don't know how long it really lasted, but it felt like ten minutes and it was loud, very loud.quot; There was a band that performed later in the show. The drummer had no drums. David let him use his set. When he was bringing his drums back on stage and setting them up for the other drummer, the audience thought David was getting set up to perform again and the clapping and cheering started all over again. After that night, whenever there was any show at the school, they had David to perform in it. The high school band director had David to join the school band, even though he could not read music.
