The entire family are huge Lego fans. We did a Mindstorms class at LegoLand FL last year and was looking forward for something like this to arrive for my son. He is 8 years old and is a massive Lego fanatic. He built and coded Vernie the robot almost completely by himself. I rarely review Lego sets but the Lego Boost set warrants it. It is absolutely fantastic. We have an Ipad at home so we didn't have any issues with the app. Every aspect of this set has worked flawlessly for us. It isn't a cheap set but, in my opinion, it is well worth the money. It teaches kids basic coding and I think that's important for the future. I am really impressed. I hope that there will be more Lego Boost sets in the future. My son has not stopped raving about it and can't wait to continue coding Vernie and eventually move on to one of the other 4 builds that can be built with this set. 5 stars the whole way!
Bought this set for my 9 year old daughter for xmas, to say she is pleased with it would be a massive understatement. She hasn't put it down since xmas day and has already built the main models and coded them and has now moved on to the creative canvas on the app, she has also managed to work out how to use the Lego boost motors and app and built a Ferris wheel for her Lego figures using pieces from other sets. Some parts of the builds could be quite difficult for a novice builder but as my daughter has been building Lego friends sets since she was 4 years old she had no problem. Overall I'm very impressed with the Lego boost set my daughter loves it and enjoys building Lego whilst also improving her ICT skills by coding on the app. Well done Lego on another great fun but also educational set
My son saved for over a year to buy this and the only problem he has with it is that little sister also likes it and wants him to share. He's 10 with no prior coding experience and it's the perfect introduction! He's already building the second robot.
I got this for my son, who has a budding interest in robotics. He has now told me this is the greatest thing I have ever done for him (despite the fact that I grew him and gave him life). Absolutely love this. Great product!
This is the best Christmas present ever for my science minded 7 year old kid. I had to help trouble shoot initially when I downloaded the app on my iPad, but other than that, he completely independently puts it together, programs it, and spends HOURS of time playing with it. It's his favorite toy and was totally worth the money. And I can feel good about it because he learns so much while doing it.
The building process, via phone, was 'ok' but not the same as using the usual paper instructions. I actually liked the stages of the build, checking moment as you went. At first it was great...but then the batteries died! :-( Wow, that was quick. 5 minutes online and it was swiftly converted to run from a usb charger! Result, that should be an option instead of aaa batteries. So far, love it, and my son (6) was quick to get the hang of the action controls via the app.
I got this build for my 7 year old son who loves to build and code so this was perfect. This build is an awsome build but lego failed in a few ways. First there is 847 parts and 11 bags and lego did not put the builds in bag order. You have to search thru all 847 parts to find what you need. One part in bag 9 next part in bag 3 next part bag 11 and so on. Very frustrating trying to find what you need. So I have been the parts finder and him the builder. Fail 2 is the box it came in. Lego should have put this build in a reclosable box like there games come in. Maybe even with a tray they use for the advent calendar.
We bought the set for our son's 6th bday and were wondering if he would be able to build it alone. I'd say he needed our help with the robot/ipad maybe 5% of the time. The set is very expensive, but as my son is more a builder and explorer than a child who actually PLAYS with lego (role play etc), this set is perfect for him; he spent already hours building and coding the robot. For his bdayhe also received several lego sets from his friends. They are all built, but just laying around after an hour of building. If you compare prices then i'd say they playtime-per-dollar is higher on the boost set than on the usual sets. Today, 12 days after receiving the gift/starting the ronot-build, he suggested we take the robot apart and built the next one. The cat. Taking the robot apart was a bit of work and I helped with that. Now he's quietly building the next challenge. Bliss! What I find a bit annoying about the set is this: 1. All the parts our now out of the numbered bags and thus it is harder to find pieces. DIY Solution: We have color sorted the pieces and placed them in large resealable bags so they can lay flat and show all the pieces of the color while the pieces are not laying around on the floor (we have a baby, too). 2. We will need to buy a resealable box to put the parts and the card board playmat, that comes with the set, in. This is not like usuallego and there are many very specific pieces. If these 800 pieces would be mixed with his normal lego (about 10 -15 sets + some classic brick boxes) he'd never be able to find the pieces back to build any of the Boost figures. Too bad the set box doesn't allow to be used long term - it being card board and non-resealable it doesn't lend itself well for storing. it seems one piece is missing (see-through 2 dot red brick) as it was not used for the robot, but it is also not in the left over bags. Will need to ask if it can be send still. 3. it needs 6 AAA batteries and as he, of course, codes and recodes the set and tries it all out, batteries die really fast.I am a bit surprised it didn't come with a rechargable battery (with the option to buy a spare one if you'd want). I hope this is something that will be available for purchse soon in a way that people who already own a set can use that option too. This especially in light of the fact that the set IS in fact expensive and I cannot simply buy an upgraded version. I hope extension boxes or App updates will come available. Ideally extension boxes that "grow" with the kids, so in two years from now he still will be challenged with building and coding these robots.
I believe most people had or will have same problem we had. We have to go through all the bags to find each brick. You wont have any clue that which bag it will be. It wastes lots time. So I sort them by colours. And each colour will separate to big bricks and small bricks. (as the pics attached). Now it comes way easier to find a brick. Hope it will help you as well.
