Beautiful Display Piece for Technologists

I purchased this beautiful typewriter as a display piece for my office. Very technical and fun build. As a professor of Information Systems/Technology I love how this typewriter captures the important influence that analog technologies had on society before the advent of digital input devices such as the keyboard. My students love it and it's also a great conversation starter on the history of the QWERTY typing system which is still prevalent, despite being obsolete and inefficient in the digital age.

Honestly, I would start by saying to take any low review with a grain of salt. This build is great and solid, the only weak point is the front under the space bar, don't pull it by that. I also would have liked a full base so you didn't see the table or surface under the keyboard, but those are minor and do not take away from the 5 stars at all. If you miss one of the steps or don't fully follow directions you can mess up something big time causing to have to back track far to fix it, but my advice on that, pay close attention to all steps. The typewriter does "work", the paper feed is tricky, mess with the angle of the mechanism behind the paper to make it work, the letter from the owner of the LEGO group is neat, maybe overkill to have 43 of them, but may have been easier than a different one per country. As you type the paper moves as does a striker and once at the end you can push it back with a satisfying clicking mechanism. Would have been perfect if they found a way to add a bell noise, but not sure how they would have accomplished that. The ribbon looks neat too. This set is going on my bookshelf and it goes great with the statue of liberty and bansai tree that I already have there. Love these sets that are easy to add to non-LEGO decore!

I bought this for the nostalgia factor. I spent years in newsrooms, and there's just something about a typewriter that makes me feel all warm and fuzzy. This build was just plain cool. There were a lot of fiddly bits and the occasional feeling that I wouldn't be able to finish it. That all came to a head when one of the pieces popped off and fell into the depths of the typewriter just as I was starting the last bag. Trying to retrieve it gracefully made it fall in deeper and get stuck in the mechanical works. Argh! I finally had to take the whole thing apart, retrieve the piece (which I gave a stern talking to), and then figure out how to put it back together again. Of course, just as I was putting on the last element, I noticed 2 little round spacers lying on the table. Ah, well. Pretty sure they weren't important. 😬 This was an extremely difficult build, but it was very satisfying in the end. I've had friends tell me that can't believe it's LEGO. That says a lot.

One of the coolest, most gorgeous sets I've ever built. Perfect for collectors or anyone looking for a great piece to display. The build itself was challenging but so very worth it. The sound of the keys is also almost exactly what a real typewriter sounds like! It's just so dang cool.

Really fun to build but at some points repetitive. You have to make each key.

You guys, I knew I wanted this set the minute I saw it and I received it from my boyfriend for my birthday. The set arrived yesterday and I started building it right away. I love LEGO so much and right now I'm really not doing any bigger builds until we move (no space)… but the minute I had the box in my hand I knew exactly what had to be done. I had so much fun building this set. I loved it from start to finish. You get to start playing with the typewriter on like bag 3 or 4. Everything about this set is brilliant. Congratulations to Steve Guinness too… what an amazing accomplishment. I'm so glad you were able to share this set with us. Thank you LEGO for giving us the platform to share our ideas too. This build is very special. If you are on the fence about purchasing, I would highly recommend getting it.

This was much more enjoyable to build than I thought it would be. A few spots were a bit challenging but they don't detract from fun of seeing all of the technical pieces come together. Definitely worth picking up.

Good product, but not an excellent

To be honest, I didn't really enjoy assembling this model. It is 80% of small parts and mechanisms, like Technics series. But I don't like this series( I like the visual component in the assembly more than painstakingly labouring over the assembly of single mechanisms. Maybe I didn't underestimate this model because I started building it right after the grand piano. Most likely it was some fatigue from these two models being assembled one after another.

Building this set was very fun and kept me busy after I got home from work however in the end my typewriter didn't move as quick after every key was pressed like I've seen in review videos. I double sometimes triple checked my work but it's just not how I wanted. It DOES move just maybe after ever 5-6 keys are pressed.

The end product looks nice but the build is awful. The tension needed to place the next element often caused previous elements to break off. The rubber pads under the space bar often pop off when being played with. There is also no base under the keys. The set needs a more robust base.
