An old French variety introduced in 1906 by C.C. Morse & Company of San Francisco under the name of Strawberry Cabbage Lettuce. It was common practice in that era (and unfortunately still is today) to rename varieties in order to make them appear to be exclusive new varieties. Compact plants seldom exceed 7 - 9 inches in diameter and are marked with very small, deep reddish-brown mottling, clustered thickly toward the center of each tongue-shaped leaf. Tender texture and excellent quality. Distinctly different than Speckled. Butterhead, 60 days. Photo courtesy of Seed Savers Exchange, David Cavagnaro.
