The greatest show on television in my opinion is Yellowstone. We can’t get enough of it. This is the first cast iron skillet I have ever owned and absolutely love it. Some things are just better on a cast iron. It is the only way to cook bacon in my opinion. This skillet comes pre-seasoned which saves you a lot of preparation time. I gave it a good wash and went right on to cooking with it. The good thing about cast iron is it is virtually impossible to break. It could literally last longer than a lifetime. Most cast iron skillets are just plain with no appeal. This is awesome with the embroidery all over the back of it. This thing is heavy duty, durable and extremely heavy. I love it. We cooked the best bacon we have ever had in this skillet. We recently fried up a ribeye in it and it was superb. The heat in a cast iron skillet incomparable. After cooking with it we simply wash it and put a light coating of extra virgin olive oil on it to protect the finish. And thats it. Put it in a cabinet for the next use.
Just got this delivered and used this morning! I am so excited about this cast iron skillet. I was nervous for the weight on my electric oven but the weight is perfect - not too heavy but heavy enough to know its an authentic skillet. will purchase one for my mom :)
This cast iron skillet comes pre-seasoned, so I'd just do a quick wipe down before cooking with it. I wouldn't consider it non-stick, though, and would try and cook with it a few times to add extra layers of seasoning to smooth out the surface even more. It sits flat on my glass cooktop and doesn't rock unevenly. It's 10.25" in diameter, so it's a good size to cook most meats, even steak and tri trip. It does a great job searing my meats to retain the juices. I love that after searing I can just put the pan directly in the oven if I need the meat cooked a little longer. This will prevent the meat from charring on the outside too much. This pan is pretty heavy, so it's nice that in addition to the handle it has a second spot to hold on to it with your other hand. It also has two little pour spouts on either side. I can't speak to the longevity of this pan, but hopefully it will last for many years!
We are so excited to be able to get one of these early on.. IMO it's a collectors item. Ours shipped directly from the Lodge Factory in Tennessee, very well packed in a collectable type carton. Not sure I'll keep that, cause I'm a cook, and this gorgeous pan is going to be well used. Lodge also makes a 12" (this one is 10.25") Yellowstone with a different design.. I'll get that one too, eventually.. they also make a Wanderlust (get out camping) series and a gorgeous Wildlife series. Check those out at the Lodge website. Not much more to say.. it's a gorgeous Cast Iron 10.25" pan.
Got this cast iron skillet mainly to finish cooking steaks on. Got a sous vide for Christmas, but my electric griddle wouldn’t get hot enough to get a good sear on it (we’re renting a house and it doesn’t have a working stove/oven, so I cook with appliances) Got the skillet today, for use with a Nuwave induction plate. Washed the skillet and dried as advised on the label. Then cooked the steaks to Med Rare with the sous vide, then tossed one at a time in the pre-heated skillet with olive oil for ~1min/side. PERFECT crust on the steaks. Looking forward to seeing what else I can cook with this pan! Will update review if I encounter any problems.
I already own 12inch and 10inch cast iron skillets and they are amazing as I cook majority of things in it compared to these non-stick pans. Ive made pizza which is great because I can heat the bottom on stove top and place in oven to bake/broil. 8 inch is good for personal pan and small enough for home fries for two. Cooking fried rice, mixed veggies is a breeze and flavor comes out great. You do have to care for the skillet unlike other items as you dont want it to rust so after washing, drying and coating with oil and heating it up is mandatory.
This is a really affordable cast iron skillet. Word of caution, the heat distribution doesn't seem to be even -- it gets really hot in the center of the pan. However, I'm cooking on an electric stove and would probably have better results with gas. I tried to fry an egg in it this weekend and it stuck pretty bad, but I think the pan just needs to be seasoned more. Overall, I think it will meet my needs, I love the price, and I'm looking forward to "breaking it in"! :)
I have a large cast iron skillet that is about 80 years old. I was excited to get a smaller one. Lodge is the premier brand. However, there is one problem. Lodge claims their pans are now preseasoned. Mine is not. I tried the instructions on the label which just say to rinse it and cook. I already knew to wipe it with just a tiny smudge of oil instead of pouring oil into the pan. My breaded chicken breasts stuck like glue. I scrubbed it, dried it, wiped it inside and out with a tiny smudge of grapeseed oil, and baked it upside in my oven at 400 degrees for an hour and now it is perfect. So, you will need to preseason it. If this is your first cast iron pan, you need to explore their website first to learn how to heat slowly and not pour oil into the pan. Finally, Lodge increased the price of their pans when they started putting designs on the bottom. Unless you display 5-pound iron pans on your wall, what is the point of a design on the bottom? I guess they are cornered. A cast iron pan can last for hundreds of years, so they need a gimmick to sell more. So it is a good pan, but novices must learn the rules of cleaning (no dishwashers or soaking), the rules of heating (no more than medium heat), and the rules of seasoning (just wipe with a high smoke point oil). To be frank, you can buy any cast iron pan or pot at a garage sale for $5, sand off the rust, season it in the oven at it will be like new.
Cast iron cracked after second use. I am certain it is a bad casting and not the material. I have a 12 and 6 inch pans and have had no issue. Lodge is a well known brand so I will be exchanging in store. I am sure this is not common, but I know this is a possibility no matter what the brand is.
I really like lodge cookware, and this is more my frustration with Walmart this order (of which almost everything has to be returned). This item arrived hanging out of its box, with a gouge created in the handle (if you know cast iron, this would be livable) and unfortunately a crack going up the rim. Due to my area, this is now an hour trip just to return it. Ordering from Walmart actually cost me a stupid amount of time and expense, and the poor packaging wasted a product that normally can last a lifetime. Will have to figure something out for Thanksgiving now.
