Fourteen year-old Lucas is different. Smaller and more intellectual than his high school classmates, he is more interested in symphonies and science than in parties and football games. Then he strikes up a summer friendship with Maggie. Thinking he's found a kindred spirit, he begins to fall in love. But when school starts in the fall, Lucas find his new friend going out for the cheerleading squad and falling in love with the football captain. Suddenly Lucas, who never minded being different, wants desperately to be like everyone else-going so far as to join the football team in an attempt to win Maggie back.
