Used it for the Hunting trip in Colorado walked all over the mountains with unit at 0 degrees and lots of wind was simple to operate and easy to use and was able to give how many miles walked and the elevation change was nice to know great for hunting!!!! Great buy for the Buck!!
I would highly recomend this product Magellan. I have been using the explorist models for several years now and recently purchased this unit as the pricepoint has come down a lot. This unit used to cost around $200+ back in the days. Protable, light, easy to use and battery last a lot. Geocaching at its best with this product. Highly recommend it! Great value as well..=)
Difficult being able to view the screen in bright daylight and bright Sunlight it is impossible.
Over the past 9 years I've had a number of outdoor GPSrs which I have and still use for off roading on dirt bikes, ATVs and my 4x4; as well being an avid Geocacher and an occasional hiker. During this time I have had GPSrs that I struggled with and others that I found to be a real joy, adding to the experience instead of being a piece of equipment that required more time and effort than the activity I was trying to take part in. Recently I acquire an eXplorist 110 to tryout as an additional unit to add to my collection for the purpose of having a light weight, low power consumption, easy to use unit that supports full paperless caching as well as handling tracks, routes and waypoints. I have found this little unit, which is the bottom of Magellan's eXplorist line, to be a joy to use. It, like its bigger brothers the eX310, eX510, eX610 and eX710 is easy to use, extremely accurate and a tool that adds to the adventure of experiencing the great outdoors. Positives for this unit – low cost, long battery life, light weight, highly accurate, paperless caching, user friendly and the list goes on. For anyone looking for a starter GPS, a low cost second unit or an extra GPS for the kids to use while caching (keeping your high end unit in your hands), this is an excellent unit. Negatives for this unit – the only real negative that I noticed with this unit is that it is limited to 500 Geocaches.
This is my first GPS. I believe this is a good unit for the price. However the user guide and instructions are practically nonexistent. I called Magellan product support for help and they are practically useless, however if you use the internet and search for help you eventually find what you need on thei website and other places such as GPS forums and such. One thing you need to do is go to Magellan's site and download their free VantagePoint software so you can plan trips and hiking tracks. For instance you can use a satellite view to mark geocaches or waypoints and then transfer those to the GPS or sync those you have visited to your PC. Note that Vantage Point is hard to find on their site but it's there and it's free. Using VantagePoint and the unit itself has a learning curve and documentation is sorely lacking for both the unit and the VantagePoint sofware, which as a novice user I find most disappointing. Perhaps more experienced users won't find this a problem. Note that I am a tech geek that is able to tech myself most new things on a PC without much trouble and I did find the lack of instructional materials frustrating, however I was able to use the unit my first time out in an are where there are no trails of any kind at all on my property, being able to mark waypoints and find the areas I had spotted on the satellite view on VnatagePoint and then later to tranfer the track I had walked back to my PC. Note that you can only viw the satellite viw and other streaming maps on VantagePoint while connected to the internet but you are also able to transfer the included basemap that is on the unit itself onto VantagePoint so you may be able to use that on a laptop in the field or pay a fee to download those maps on VantagePoint so you can use them off line. Overall I find the unit does what I need it to and was also able to use it to navigate to an address in an unfamiliar area without much effort although it is a completely different experience than a typical car GPS unit. Note that you need to take a few steps in order for use the included digital compass function but I understand this is typical of handheld GPS units. Just remember that if you don't take a few steps the compass will not point to North if you turn around. (it's always best to take an old fashioned compass as a backup as well as spare batteries just in case) I think Magellan's documentation could be better and there is a learning curve for both the unit and the VantagePoint software but I was able to locate clearings on the satellite map and input them into the unit... note thatif you use another map such as Google Earth that you might have to shorten the coordinates to the same number of decimal places or VantagePoint will not accept them. In my case I had to take off the last digit but I was still able to walk right to the waypoints I had input to within a few feet. I'm keeping the unit although the documentation could be much better and no doubt I'm not using some features to their fullest extent. Magellan's tech support did say they are updating their user guide but we'll see. You can download a better guide on their site than what is included in the box but it's still lacking. Luckily there are lots of GPS hobbyist discussion forums on the internet so with a little effort you can find out what you need.
