The Magellan Roadmate is an excellent GPS unit. It has an easy to use start-up site, it is easy to use, accurate, and has clear imagery. I highly recommend this item.

This is a good product. I had a different model Magellan and I loved it. Someone in Portland Or. is enjoying that one so I had to replace it. They really help a lot when you are driving in a city where you need help. It will even help you find hotels and gas ect.

Magellan's GPS routing software is the BEST.!!

I love the big sized screen. It helps these old eyes when wanting to give just a quick glance from the road. The main reason I bought a Magellan vice their competitor Garmin is from my previous experiences with the two. My first GPS bought many years ago was a Magellan and it serviced me well. I then bought a Garmin and gave the old one to my Son. I bought a second Garmin GPS for my Harley only because it was rated the best for motorcycles. However, the Garmin's do not perform as well as the Magellan's do. Both Magellan's give me the ability to program it to use freeway's as much as possible. The Garmin does not have that capability. Many times I have found either Garmin sending me through back streets and side roads because it was "the shorter" way. If you are not familiar with the area and you make that first turn you may be too far down the road to turn back. I remember one time the Garmin sent me down a secondary road thinking it would hook me up to the freeway that I knew was close. It wound up sending me parallel to the freeway that was on the other side of a ridge. Never did the Garmin try to send me out to the freeway which was a much faster route. Bottom line, buy Magellan - That's my long time experience. My recent experience with this new Magellan is just like I remembered with the old one. Never once has it tried to send me off of a freeway or the better way. I will always stay with Magellan from here on in. It seems faster in traffic turning response as well. The ONLY negative to this Magellan Roadmate GPS is the way it connected in the holder. It uses a USB connector as the base electrical contact instead of a solid large plug-in. I find it difficult when having to remove and plug in the GPS. It's a "cheap" way to give the GPS connectivity.

Positive: Maps and directions just as good as the 4.25" Magellan that I used for seven years. I hope to get that much use out of this one. Neutral: Suction cup is almost worthless. It comes loose almost immediately. I overcame this by using the disk from my old Magellan GPS and employing Velcro on the disk and the suction cup of the holder. Works fine with Velcro adaption. Negative: Look-up for specific business does not work. I tried to look up Lowe's (4 miles away) to test the system operation. Besides the Lowes only four miles away, there are two other Lowes in our small metro area. Result on Megellan was a single independent garage 35 miles away. Note to self: take cellular iPad with me when I travel to look up address of a business. Then, put address in Magellan GPS.

Large Screen But No Bluetooth

I purchased this GPS because Magellan's site showed it had Bluetooth and the 7 inch display. It does NOT have Bluetooth. Due to its size the stand is not strong enough to keep it from vibrating when hitting the slightest unevenness in the road. The display is great. A function I really like on the Garmin is your speed displayed on the screen. On the Magellan you have to touch the screen to have it displayed, but it only stays displayed for a few seconds. The input for city and street names is not as intuitive as the Garmin. The touch screen is not sensitive enough. You really have to push hard on the screen to get it to work. It does not remember your route preferences; every time you set a new route, you have to also set your preferences. It is not as easy to stop a routing as the Garmin. I have had four different GPS's and none of them seem to have all the features I want. One day maybe!

Nice features, but got us lost.

We planned on buying another GPS that we had done research on before our road trip this summer. However, we waited until last minute to purchase, and it was not available. We saw this, and liked the huge screen. We bought it. It comes with a suction cup mounting system, but we felt more comfortable with placing it in the cup area of our center console. That allowed for less movement, and less glare on the big screen. The unit posts the speed limit of each road you are on, even in Canada. That was a big plus. The screen is easy to read, and the map zooms in with arrows when you get near a turn. That made a difference when we approached confusing on and off ramps. It was easy to use and spoke directions clearly. It sometimes used landmarks to advise us where to turn, which is a nice feature. The female voice was machine like, and often mispronounced roads, words, and towns. So, why do we give it a poor grade? For one, when we pick fastest route, it only chooses interstates and highways, without thought to possible short cuts on side roads that save mileage and time. For instance, locally, I was headed home with the GPS still on. It had me going north on the highway to another town, then south on another highway back to a town that was parallel to the town I was in. There was a road straight across from one town to the next, but the GPS would not choose that route under "fastest". Another time, we turned it on from our hotel room and asked it to rout to a particular address fastest. It had us going out on the interstate, when all we needed to do was drive thru the parking lot, and make a few turns. Maybe we should leave it on "shortest" instead. This GPS also hates to be taken off its configured route. We missed a left turn (more on that in a minute), and opted to make the next turn, which would put us on the same street anyway. We noticed the GPS reconfiguring, and expected it to accept our route. To our astonishment, it wanted us to make several U-turns, and turns to get us back to it's original planned route. Why would I do that when I'm already where I need to be? We also noticed the unit would send us two blocks and several turns out of our way to get to a building that was just up the street from where we were. On another note, this GPs unit would sometimes wait until too late to advise me to make a turn. Normally that's ok, but in three lanes of traffic, I need a lot more warning, so I can navigate thru the traffic and get into the correct lane. Apparently it also has a feature that can reroute you when approaching congested traffic. In theory that sounds cool, but it took us, unexpectedly, off the interstate and onto a parallel highway thru an unfamiliar area we were not comfortable with. Did it save us time, and bypass the congestion? We can't be certain. We never did see if there even was congestion on the interstate, and the highway we were routed to had several stop lights and too much traffic. If this were not enough, on more than one occasion, it brought us to an incorrect location. For instance, we were low on fuel, and used an option to find the nearest gas station. It took us to a residential neighbor hood, and informed us that some guy's house was a gas station. Funny, yes, but not when you're driving near Detroit, Michigan, and are low on fuel. Once, we had it search for a farm attraction that we had read was near our return route home. We looked it up by title. We were brought to a fast food restaurant of the same name. I can't really blame the machine for that, as I should have confirmed the correct address before assuming it was correct. I think this would be a better machine if there were: 1) options for other voices 2) the ability to correct the map, and accept other user's corrections 3) another option, other than fastest or shortest, like simplest or easiest (something that uses a mixture of interstate speed with shortcuts along the way) 4) possibly a feature that warns of high crime areas. 5)more warning time for turns coming up on congested roads. I suppose most of my complaints could be chocked up to user inexperience, but I think the average potential purchaser should get an honest review.

Worst GPS I Have Ever Owned !!

Reviewed in the USA on 2013-07-01T17:00:00

I picked this GPS up in the Walmart in Sylva, NC (I had forgotten my old one, and had some tricky navigating to do). I figured, "Why not get the one with the big screen". I soon found that most of the features Magellan listed on the box required internet access to set up (duh !!, I was on a TRIP, and that was at home). It called for charging for 3 hours before using (but included no wall plug - if my Subaru isn't running, the outlets are dead - a battery safety featuree). I figured "no problem", the next leg of the trip was 400 miles (way more than 3 hours), so I hooked it up to run off my car outlet, charging it as I went (I thought !!). It turned out the battery on mine would not accept a charge (obviously defective), but it ran while It was plugged in. During the trip I found that the mount was way to delicate to hold the GPS in place, and I had to keep adjusting it as I went (so much for the "don't fool with the GPS while you are moving" warning). Also, the screen caught every reflection of light, and most of the time I couldn't see what was on the screen. About 40 miles from home, the unit just went "blank screen", and died completely. The box had a sticker that said "don't return to seller", contact Magellan and they would handle warranty work (by the way, the warranty says a year, but it's really "14 days" (read it yourself) !! Since it had been less than 14 days, I figured I was "good to go", but I've been in an endless e-mail fight with Magellan, with new things for me to try each time. On top of that, they say they will not return my money, the best I can get is having this one refurbished, or another of the same unit. This was money down the toilet!! I'll never buy another Magellan product in my life !!

I purchased this from the Portage Indiana Walmart, used it 4 times, went to turn it on, and it would not work, checked the cord, everything was hooked up correctly, this is where the fun times with the Magellan customer service began, first off I spent over 1 hour on hold just trying to get someone on the phone, finially someone answered with souch a heave accent I could not understand them, she transfered me to the department that handles repairs, so far I have an hour and a half in this mess, then they informed me that they would gladly exchange my gps for a re-furbished one, "REALLY" mine was only 2 months old barely, they refused to refund my money on this, and wanted me to pay the shipping both ways, I decided to throw the thing in the trash, I purchased a new Garmin, I will never buy any more Magellan products, the customer service at Magellan is deplorable, the whole process of trying to return this took over 2 hours, and they just didn't care
