This GPS is ideal for those of us who use more than one boat and need to find various fishing holes, shellfish beds, and out of the way channels in out of the way backwaters.
I purchased the Magellan Triton GPS earlier this year and used it on our first caching trip at the end of February this year. The unit acquires satellites very quickly and seems very accurate. There is a steep learning curve however and using it was a challenge at first. The instruction manual is available on line and is somewhat helpful but assumes some knowledge that the user may not have. For instance any one familiar with using Geocaching.com knows about downloading loc files in “Easygps” as a loc file and loading this directly into the GPS. Magellan has instead supplied a program called “Vantage Point” which is the only way the user can communicate with the GPS unit. “Vantage Point” will, however allow either the GPX file to be downloaded or the Loc file. The major problem with this is that neither download transfers the GC ,cache identification number, instead just the cache name is transferred. Magellan says that “the model of your GPS unit doesn't support this kind of feature yet “ the email goes on to say that my concern will be forwarded to R&D for possible inclusion in future development. Over all despite the above short coming I feel that the GPS is worth the money and the inclusion of the entire geo-cache narrative makes the unit a very worth wile unit to use for geocaching.
I purched this on clearance with great expectations. After reading the reviews, I was a little worried. I did find that it seems the majority of the concerns listed here seem to have baan worked out. There was an immediate software upgrade available to me straight out of the box. I bought this for geocaching and now that I've learned the vantage point software, I really like this. The only problem I've had with it is that the connection cord is very sensetive. It's a metal contact connection versus a full plug in, and it tends to lose connection if I so much as breath on it wrong. I am actually going to contact Magellan to see if they will send a replacemnt, hopefully that will resolve it. Overall, I would reccomend this product, especially if you are an avid geocacher.
Let's clear something up. Magellan did not meet consumers expectations when this product hit the streets. Like every new electronic that interfaces with outside sources, there is a growing pain. All the bug's (the main one's) are worked out in my opinion. Most of the negative reviews were last summer (2008). Those interface issues have been corrected. I purchased this product knowing I could return it in the event there was a major issue. I had the system up and running with the National Geo TOPO maps in a few hours with NO PROBLEM!!! I have used it little thus far but I am at this point completly happy. If you purchase this product exercise some patience when setting it up and you will be happy. tritonforum.com is the best place to go to for information. Another point: I returned my Garmin eTrex Venture HC after the severe dissappointment in the cost of the maps and the quality.
Sounds like I'm being hard but I read reveiws and compare before I buy and I blew it on this one!
We purchased this for family geo caching. It was not calibrated, and we couldn't download the software. It has been returned.
I bought this GPS because "It workes with TOPO!". Not so. Even with it's own software I could not make contact, although I'm running the latest Vista Ultimate. Drivers would not install. As for GPSs, with the same basic specs there are many better ones out there in a cheaper price range. I should have stuck with my G**min. Tis thing is going back to the shop tomorrow.
Received as early Christmas gift to use while 4-wheeling. Took forever to get the operators manual downloaded. Never was able to get any of the "free" maps downloaded to machine. It refused to acknowledge an SD card inserted. 4 seperate formatted cards tried but it never accepted any of them. Naturally there was no customer "hotline" for support. Looks like Garmin will have my business. This unit will be returned in less than 24 hours!!!
I read the reviews available (and others on other sites) before I bought this GPS as a Christmas present for myself. I figured that since I'm a computer technician I could get it to work even though many have tried. Unfortuantely, all the reviews are right. I couldn't get the GPS to connect properly to my PC - it couldn't download any of the free maps. It never recognized the SD card and it never was recognized by the TOPO! software. The management software took forever to load. And there are no tech support phone numbers supplied to at least try to get help. Please don't buy this GPS. The only good thing is that Walmart takes everything back, so I had no trouble returning it. I will try another GPS through Walmart just in case I have to return it. Does anyone have any suggestions for a different GPS to try?
NEARLY USELESS. DOESNT DOWNLOAD MAPS. NO SERVICE NUMBERS. WILL NOT BUY PRODUCT LINE AGAIN.
