This set is a lighted set, however just be advised that there is only one "light up block" that illuminates. So all the rest of the blocks are not lit. The light up block is USB rechargeable so that part is nice though. I think that calling this a lighted set might be a little misleading with only one part that actually lights, although my kids have never complained. We received our first Magformers as a gift and at first when we got them - they didn't seem like they would be all that cool - but even years later they get played with by my now almost 11 year old and my almost 4 year old both. Each set we continue to receive is loved and added to our collection. Every set will work with every other to expand it's capabilities. I think the appeal for my younger child is the ease that they can be put together into a meaningful shape. Each part pretty much is going to go into another part in some way. And by watching his older brother he can now master building even more complex shapes and forms and vehicles. The appeal for my older child is just the creativity and ease of play. You don't have to spend hours of planning... you can just pick this up and make something that works within minutes. Spend a few more minutes and you can makes something more intricate even. So no matter what set you get they all work the same way and will work with each other. But each set will have a different theme to it, there's a amusement park type set there's this set, a vehicle set, things like that. Do you research and go from there!
