Yes the hanging instructions on this rod are frustrating BUT IT IS THE ONLY QUALITY ROD THAT YOU CAN BUY THAT IS TENSION AND NOT HARDWARE INSTALLATION. The video explains it best. https://www.walmart.com/ip/Better-Homes-and-Gardens-Metal-Shower-Curtain-Rod-Collection/16332395 This is the only rod I've ever had that didn't fall down every 3 months. Mine has been up over a year, and yes, at first I thought it was broken/defective. The key is to follow the instructions and then turn the finial at the end to super tighten it against the tile. BEST. ROD. EVER. It does not install like a traditional tension rod. It does not have springs that give out over time. Just tighten the end finial once every year or two and you are good to go. I haven't bought one in at least a year, hope it hasn't really been discontinued! Ps. Make sure to instal over tile not paint.

You get what you pay for. It isn't pretty but for an inexpensive tension rod it does the job!!
