I started out with a Marantz SR6012, which I liked. I got upgrade-itis and got an Arcam AVR20. It had great sound but after a network issue I found the online setup to get it up and running again was a pain. I yearned for the ease of the Marantz onscreen display, so traded it for an AV7706. The Arcam had slightly better channel separation for home theatre, but the Marantz sounded every bit as good, if not a tad better. After having AV7706 a month, the urge arose to go top of the line. AV7706 was not wanting in performance, but the higher end AV8805a beckoned. Living with AV8805A for the past month, I appreciate the sound quality improvements. It has more channels (just in case), a learning remote, better DACs, the “sub display” below the porthole, and better onscreen instructions. My system includes an Emotiva XPA Gen 3, 11 channel amp, and with my Focal Arias, the system sounds wonderful. Ran Audyssey using the optional phone app (worked fine) and it now sounds even better. Movies via Blu Ray or streaming (Netflix, HBO) envelope the listener. Channels are well separated, and it does an excellent job recognizing and handling Atmos signals. Non-Atmos encoded soundtracks sound good using Dolby Digital Plus. For what it's worth, the Auro-3D option sounds good too, especially for concert videos. Stereo sound via CD is excellent. I use my Oppo BD105 to play CD's and it sends the signal via HDMI or digital (coax). I prefer HDMI, which uses the DACs in the Marantz. While Oppo has good DACs, I find the Marantz DACs are better. I do not see the need to invest in a standalone DAC for stereo, given what Marantz does on its own. Some of my test pieces, i.e., vocals by Basia and Diana Krall, are silky smooth and melodious. Classical and opera are equally terrific; the horns now soar, the kettle drums thunder in Also sprach Zarathustra (think 2001, A Space Odyssey), and Puccini's Turandot is a joy. The Who and Talking Heads sound pretty darn good too. When I stream music, it is from Amazon Music via HDMI from the TV app, and it sounds quite good. Oddly, Amazon music sounds better from the TV app than via Heos. I use the AV8805A primarily for home theatre, and one big change in my system was to migrate from a setup of 5.2.6 to 7.2.4, re-purposing surrounds. The side surrounds are a major improvement, providing details heretofore lost. Having done that, and given the improved surround sound, I had to wonder why it took me so long. Overall, I enjoy the build quality, reliability, ease of use and, most of all, the sound quality of the Marantz. A few negatives in the AV8805A are the small displays in the porthole and the sub display below it when the panel is open. The sound setting, i.e., Atmos or DD+, is visible, but the volume setting, in particular, is difficult to read from across the room. While the porthole rimmed in blue is a nice design touch, that display, or the display below, is too small. Wish it was larger. Another is the way the setup menu is handled when a TV with eARC is connected to the HDMI Monitor 1 connector (per the instruction manual). Btw, this situation is the same for AV8805A and AV7706. When using the Blu-Ray, DVD or Media Player inputs, pressing Setup on the Remote displays the setup menu on screen, easily enabling tweaks or changes. I previously used an Amazon Fire 4K TV Stick to stream video through the Media Player input, and the setup menu readily displayed. On Netflix and HBO, Marantz recognizes Atmos from the TV, but not from the stick. I recently invested in a high-end, high speed HDMI cable with ethernet to connect the TV, but it did not help; the cable was not the issue. Over time, I found my Sony Bravia TV does a far better job sending Atmos audio signals. To take advantage of Atmos, I now use the TV as my streaming device full time. The TV input is displayed on AV8805A as “TV Audio.” However, when I press Setup on the remote to access the menu, nothing happens. I ran another HDMI cable from a secondary video out on the TV to the Monitor 2 HDMI input on AV8805A, and now when I click the CBL/SAT input and then press Setup on the remote, I can access the setup menu. Huh? Why should I have to switch inputs to access setup, when a single click on the remote works properly for other inputs? I chatted with a very helpful Marantz support representative, and it appears this is an issue that needs to be addressed in the software.

I have used this for a little over two years and the sound quality is the best of any surround receiver or separate I have owned, and I have had a few. I replaced a Marantz AV7005 with this and the 8805 is a huge upgrade. Among others I have had is a Rotel system (they could not keep the amp repaired,) a Harman Kardon receiver (great until a channel went out and drove me to separates,) and an early Marantz receiver with a universal remote control that never lived up to its hype. Set-up with Audessy was easy. I always take the initial settings as a serving suggestion, but I had to do very little adjustment compared to the AV 7005. The MM phono stage works well, but I could not adapt an MC stage to the 8805-it most likely was my outside phono stage. The DAC on the CD input is nearly as good as my external DAC, I really have to listen to hear a difference when I route the CD transport into the 8805. I do not use the streaming features much, but what I have used is impressive. The radio does pick up some remote stations. Overall this is the best Marantz product I have owned since the 70s.
I chose the Marantz AV8805A because of its musicality & warmth, as other brands I've owned tend to be cold & digital , the Marantz is more analogue in character. I will never go back to other brands, very happy customer.
I upgraded from the 8802a and enjoy this unit (8805a) just as much and more with added listening modes. Sound stage and quality are excellent. Built like a tank and easy on the eyes. I love the flexibility in configuring the speakers and assignable amps. I use all 13 channels and it sounds awesome. I would have give an overall 5 star except the HDMI sync/handshake is not always reliable with my Epson Projector when using PC as the source when streaming music. It will keep trying to connect until it finally does after about 4-5 minutes sometimes. Other HDMI sources connect first shot.
I upgraded from an AV7703 in an 11.2 setup to a AV8805A in a 13.2 setup. My input devices are Apple TV 4K, Tivo Edge 4K, and of course ARC from a Samsung 8-series 82" LED TV. The AV7703 worked great in this setup. The AV8805A regularly loses sync with the input HDMI signal, at which time video and audio drop out. Recovering requires switching inputs or toggling power. This happens when the video mode changes, such as when returning to a Home Menu from streaming. Profoundly disappointing for such an expensive model.
